The trend of caravans and overlanding vehicles is not very popular in India. Even off-roading is popular only among a very small section of SUV buyers. Lately, we have been seeing a trend among youngsters where they actually go on road trips with their families in their cars. Many of them convert or make changes to the cabin to make it suitable for the trip. There are several garages that do this job professionally. We have seen Force Travellers and buses getting converted into caravans. However, here we have a video where a Tata 2.5-ton 4×4 truck that was once used by the Indian Army has been neatly converted into an overlanding vehicle.

The video has been uploaded by Small Town Rider on his YouTube channel. In this video, the vlogger shows a Tata 715C army truck (better known as Tata 2.5 Ton) that has been converted into a caravan. The truck was actually bought at an army auction by its current owner. The owner started working on this project two years ago. Even when the video was recorded, the work was not complete.

The original look of the truck was completely changed. The body was entirely redesigned. The truck has now been designed to look like an armored army vehicle. Metal pipes run all across the panels to give it the desired shape.

It is an extremely huge truck, and driving such a vehicle on the road is extremely challenging. The owner mentions that he is actually building an expedition-ready vehicle that can go through almost any type of terrain. There are six hydraulic jacks installed in the vehicle.

The jacks installed on the front and rear help in lifting the vehicle in case the driver wants to change the tire or even wants to set up the tent on an uneven surface. The truck also has two jacks that actually push the side walls outside and extend the body.

This makes more space for occupants and a bed. The roof can also be lifted using hydraulic lift. The rear of the truck can be pulled out manually to convert this portion into a deck. There is a fire pit, and the same pit would also warm up the cabin using the pipes laid under the truck. There are all essentials like batteries to power the cabin and a water tank under the floor.

There is a split AC installed inside the cabin, and the compressor is placed outside. The cabin and dashboard are not yet designed. The owner mentions that they are currently working on the interior, and it is likely to be finished in the coming months.

This is an extremely labor-intensive project, and it is going to be one of a kind of truck. What makes this one of a kind is that it comes with 4×4 and rear diff locks. It can easily go over most obstacles without engaging 4×4. However, it is built in such a manner that it can perform well both on and off the road.

The owner also mentions that this is probably the last truck that would ever be sold at an army auction, as the government has decided to simply scrap old vehicles rather than selling them in an auction to civilians. As this is a massive modification project, the cost of modification is currently not known.
