Looking back at 2024, the automotive sector seems to have evolved much. The sales data from December shows interesting advancements. Tata Motors has overtaken Hyundai India to become the second-largest car manufacturer in the country, following its impressive sales performance in December 2024.
Tata recorded sales of 44,221 passenger vehicles, registering a 1.7% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to 43,471 units sold in December 2023. Hyundai, on the other hand, slipped to third place, selling 42,208 units in December, a 1.3% YoY decline.
Despite the drop, Hyundai recorded its highest-ever yearly domestic sales, with 6,05,433 units sold in 2024. However, in December, Tata outperformed Hyundai by a narrow margin of 2,013 units, becoming India’s second-best carmaker.
Upping The EV Game: Harrier EV And Hyundai Creta EV
Both Tata Motors and Hyundai seem to have promising launch plans and product offensive for 2025. The most notable duel will be between the upcoming Harrier.EV and Creta EV. The Korean carmaker recently revealed the specifications and details of their upcoming electric SUV. When launched, it will give the Harrier EV tight competition. Recently, spy pictures of the Harrier EV being tested on the CoASTT test track had also surfaced. Both SUVs will be showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show in New Delhi this month.
Before we move into the launch details, let us walk you through the Creta Electric. It will be available with two battery pack choices: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. The larger battery pack will give you a range of 473 km while the smaller will return 390 km in range. Hyundai says that the vehicle will do the 0-100 sprint in 7.9 seconds.
The manufacturer also has claimed that both battery packs will be able to charge (via DC) from 10% to 80% in just 58 minutes. 10-100% will take 4 hours over an 11 kW wall charger. The Creta EV will be offered in four variants- Executive, Smart, Premium, and Excellence. Bookings are now open against a payment of Rs 25,000. Details on the variant-wise features and prices are expected to be out on January 17th.
The Harrier EV will be based on the Acti.EV platform. It will likely have a battery pack that would deliver a range close to 500 km per charge. The electric motor would be rear-mounted and there will be a dual motor setup as well. The Harrier EV will thus have AWD as well.
Tata Vs Hyundai Rivalry To Intensify
Hyundai is also expected to launch more affordable EVs in the coming years. It will likely launch an electric Venue and/or the Inster EV. The Inster EV, if launched, will compete with the Tata Punch EV. The electric Punch is currently doing well in terms of sales. A proper fight here would give EV buyers more options to choose from. The Korean manufacturer will also launch a facelift to the Tucson SUV. It will further hype the competition in the SUV space.
Tata Motors has a bunch of interesting launches planned for 2025. The products in the pipeline include the Sierra (ICE and EV), Harrier EV, Safari EV and Harrier (petrol). The Sierra (ICE) will likely compete with the Creta and Alcazar with its dimensions.
