It seems like the launch date for Tata Motors’ next CNG car, the Nexon iCNG, is near. This is being speculated because recently a test mule of this vehicle was spotted testing on the roads. The fully camouflaged test mule of the Nexon iCNG appeared to be on its final leg of road tests, showing the exterior design details of this highly anticipated upcoming CNG model.
Tata Nexon iCNG: Exterior Design Details
As per reports, this test mule was spotted near Pune, Maharashtra. From the outside, it was noted that it was completely covered in camouflage. However, some parts of the car were exposed as the camouflage was peeling off. It was noted that the test mule underneath was finished in white.
We can see from the images that the Nexon iCNG continues to boast the same design as the standard model. This means it gets the same sharp and aggressive body lines, split LED headlight setup, and bold bumper.
The side profile also looked exactly the same as the petrol- and diesel-powered models. It was noted that the SUV was equipped with alloy wheels on the front left, while the rear left had a steel wheel.
Apart from this, the most notable change was a slightly raised rear. Meanwhile, the rest of the tailgate, LED taillights, and bumper all appeared to be the same as the standard models.
Interior Design and Features
The Tata Nexon iCNG is anticipated to retain most of the features found in the petrol and diesel variants. It will get the same modern cabin with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 10.25-inch digital instrument gauge cluster, and touch-based HVAC controls.
The higher-spec versions of the Nexon iCNG could also get the single-pane electric sunroof with voice command integration, a wireless charger, and a premium JBL sound system. Its list of tech could also include the iRA app-powered connectivity suite.
In terms of safety features, the Nexon iCNG variant should come equipped with six airbags, front parking sensors, a 360° surround view system, a blind-view monitor, and auto headlamps paired with rain-sensing wipers.
Tata’s iCNG Technology
Now coming to the main highlight of the Tata Nexon iCNG: its CNG technology. The company, as we all know, offers a twin CNG cylinder setup, which, unlike traditional single-cylinder kits, offers more space in the boot. The entire boot of Tata iCNG cars becomes usable as the company hides the cylinders underneath the rear storage compartment.
Most likely, the upcoming Tata Nexon iCNG will be offered with safety features such as a micro-switch to keep the car switched off during refueling. The vehicle will also come equipped with thermal incident protection, which will shut off the CNG supply to the engine.
It will also release petrol into the environment as a safety measure. According to Tata Motors, the twin cylinders below the baggage area offer the safest option because the valves and pipes are shielded from any harm under the load floor.
Additionally, the cylinders will be held by a 6-point mounting system, which will provide additional rear crash safety. The Nexon iCNG will most likely also come with an advanced Single ECU and feature Direct Start in CNG mode. This will allow for jerk-free shifting between petrol and CNG modes.
Nexon iCNG: Powertrain
As for the powertrain, the Tata Nexon iCNG is expected to be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This is the same engine found in the petrol variant. This engine generates around 118 bhp and 170 Nm of torque in its petrol version.
However, in the Nexon iCNG, the power output will be slightly decreased, just like all the other CNG models. It should be noted that the Nexon iCNG will become the first car in the country to offer a turbo petrol engine with a CNG kit installed.
As for fuel efficiency, the exact figures have not been revealed. However, it is believed that it could offer around 20 km/kg. The petrol Tata Nexon offers a mileage of around 17-24 kmpl.
Tata Nexon iCNG: Pricing
Tata Motors is expected to launch the Nexon iCNG by the 30th of September. However, the official date is yet to be confirmed. As for the pricing, the Nexon iCNG could command a premium of Rs 90,000 over its standard petrol-powered counterpart. Once launched, it will be competing with the Maruti Brezza CNG in India.
