Tata Motors has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Safer Choice’ Award by Global NCAP for safety offered on the Safari and Harrier. This highly revered recognition is for ‘automakers committing to the highest levels of safety performance for cars sold in India’. Tata has been actively working on improving vehicle and crash safety standards across its product range and the award is a testament of the same.

Both the Safari and Harrier achieved five-star safety ratings in Global NCAP crash tests, for adult and child safety. They had achieved the highest scores in last year’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. Following this, Tata Motors sent these vehicles for further ‘Safer Choice’ conformity tests. These require the participating vehicles to meet higher safety standards. The Harrier and Safari came out successful with their Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), speed assistance, and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems.

David Ward, President of the Towards Zero Foundation, commended Tata Motors’ dedication to safety, saying, “We are pleased to present the Safer Choice Award to Tata Motors for the Safari and Harrier. This award highlights their commitment to achieving high levels of protection for both occupants and vulnerable road users.”

The Safer Choice Award was introduced by Global NCAP in 2018. The protocols were recently updated. To qualify for the award, a vehicle must achieve a five-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection. It must also provide a speed assistance system that scores fully in test criteria, meet UN regulatory requirements for AEB, and offer BSD as a standalone option that adheres to Global NCAP’s performance standards.

Mohan Savarkar, Vice President and Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, expressed his gratitude for the recognition. “We are honoured to receive the Safer Choice Award for our Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. Our focus on safety is reflected in every vehicle we manufacture, setting a benchmark in the industry. This recognition reinforces our commitment to providing high safety standards alongside comfort and performance,”

Full 5-Star SUV Lineup

Tata Motors currently has the only GNCAP five-star certified SUV lineup in India. The range begins with Punch (ICE and EV), the micro SUV. Other models include the Nexon (ICE and EV forms), Harrier, and Safari. The manufacturer recently spearheaded a new segment- that of SUV coupes- by launching the Curvv in both ICE and EV forms. The GNCAP ratings for the Curvv are yet to be revealed. However, considering the wide range of safety features on offer, it could get a 5-star rating as well.

Tata Motors had also sent the new Safari and Harrier for Bharat NCAP (India’s own independent safety performance evaluation protocol) crash tests. These SUVs received 5-star ratings in BNCAP crash tests, thereby becoming the first-ever vehicles to do so.
