The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is all set to grow its family. A three-row sibling of the popular hybrid SUV has been spotted testing near Bengaluru, revealing Toyota’s answer to family SUVs like the Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar. The prototype, heavily camouflaged, suggests a stretched version of the Hyryder designed to accommodate seven passengers. This development comes close on the heels of Maruti Suzuki announcing its own plans for a seven-seat Grand Vitara, the Hyryder’s mechanical twin.

Stretching the Formula

The spy shots suggest a familiar silhouette, but with some critical tweaks. The wheelbase seems extended to create space for a third row, while the rear overhang looks noticeably longer. At the back, sleeker LED tail-lamps replace the standard five-seater units, framing a redesigned tailgate.

Up front, a revised grille and bumper are expected to help distinguish the seven-seater from the standard Hyryder. New alloy wheels and roof rails also hint at minor but meaningful exterior updates.

Inside the Cabin

On the inside, Toyota is likely to carry over the Grand Vitara’s dashboard layout but with a few premium touches suited for a more family-focused buyer. Some of the expected highlights include:

• Ventilated front seats

• A panoramic sunroof

• A 360-degree parking camera

• A larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system (up from the current 9-inch unit)

• Six airbags as standard

While details are still under wraps, the focus seems to be on making the cabin more comfortable and feature-rich without straying too far from the original Hyryder formula.

Powertrain and Performance

Toyota’s hybrid expertise remains central to the package. The seven-seater Hyryder is expected to retain the same petrol-electric powertrains as its five-seater sibling:

• 1.5-litre Mild Hybrid: 103 PS, 137 Nm, available with 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox

• 1.5-litre Strong Hybrid: 116 PS combined output, paired with an e-CVT gearbox

Fuel efficiency will continue to be a strong selling point. Real-world reports suggest the Hyryder hybrid delivers around 20.3 kmpl under mixed driving conditions — a figure that could make this the most fuel-efficient seven-seater SUV in India.

Where It Will Fit

The seven-seater Hyryder is expected to launch around Diwali 2025, with prices likely starting at ₹16 lakh (ex-showroom). This positions it neatly between the existing five-seat Hyryder (₹11.34–19.99 lakh) and the larger Innova HyCross.

In terms of competition, it will go head-to-head with established names like the Tata Safari (₹16.19–27.34 lakh) and Hyundai Alcazar (₹16.77–25.08 lakh). Maruti Suzuki’s version, the seven-seat Grand Vitara, is expected to be priced ₹1–1.5 lakh lower than the Toyota, following their usual shared-platform strategy. Both models will be manufactured at Maruti’s new Kharkhoda plant, helping optimise production costs.

Toyota’s Family SUV Ambitions

With the Innova HyCross already well established in the premium MPV space, the seven-seat Hyryder marks Toyota’s attempt to capture a more mainstream family SUV audience. It promises the SUV styling that buyers desire, along with the fuel-sipping efficiency of a hybrid — a combination that could appeal strongly to Indian families looking for an economical yet stylish upgrade.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are expected to be offered in top variants, while Maruti’s extensive dealer network could help Toyota’s twin offering reach deeper into the market.

With the seven-seater Hyryder on the horizon, Toyota is gearing up to make family SUVs more accessible — without compromising on the efficiency and comfort that Indian buyers increasingly demand.
