Toyota’s range of upcoming products for India clearly has SUV domination in it. The carmaker is already enjoying unparalleled success with the Fortuner here. It will launch at least three SUVs in 2025, one of which will be an all-electric product.
Fortuner MHEV
The highly successful Toyota Fortuner is expected to receive an update soon, but it won’t be a complete generation change or a facelift. Instead, the update will likely introduce the Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) version of the Fortuner, which is already being sold in international markets like South Africa.
The Fortuner MHEV will feature a 48V mild hybrid system, designed to improve its performance and fuel efficiency. The mild hybrid system provides extra assistance during acceleration and operates the SUV at low speeds, enhancing overall driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. Additionally, it is more environment-friendly, causing less pollution compared to the regular diesel variants.
The MHEV will use a hybrid version of the 2.8-liter, four-cylinder, GD series diesel engine—but there may be slight changes in power output due to the addition of the hybrid setup. It is expected to produce 201 hp and 500 Nm and could still deliver around 13 kpl in fuel efficiency. The mild hybrid system will only be available in the diesel variant, while the petrol Fortuner will continue with the 2.7-litre naturally aspirated engine.
In addition to the hybrid heart, the MHEV could get more features and tech as well. A notable price premium is also expected on the mild hybrid Fortuner. Details of launch timeline are unknown at the moment.
Expected launch: 2025
Hyryder 7 Seater
To compete with rivals like the new Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV 700, and Tata Safari, Toyota is gearing up to launch a 7-seater version of the Hyryder. This upcoming SUV will have a Suzuki counterpart as well.
In addition to adding two extra seats, Toyota is expected to make cosmetic changes to the design to accommodate the increased length of the vehicle. These may include adjustments to the exterior and possibly even the interior layout, to ensure the third row is seamlessly integrated and comfortable. The cabin is expected to feature additional tech and equipment.
The 7-seater is rumoured to carry over the same engine and power figures as the regular Hyryder. Both the 1.5-litre petrol engine options—naturally aspirated and strong hybrid versions—will be retained, offering similar performance. The launch is expected in early or mid 2025.
Expected launch: early or mid 2025
Urban Electric SUV
Toyota’s first EV for India will be a badge-engineered version of the production-spec Maruti eVX concept. It was showcased previously at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The production form will launch in the second half of 2025. It could come with features like a fully digital instrument cluster, floating touchscreen infotainment system and ADAS.
The Urban electric SUV is expected to offer range figures of up to 550 km on a single charge. It will be underpinned by the 27PL skateboard platform, co-developed by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki.
Reports also say that there will be two battery packs on offer: 48 kWh and a larger 60 kWh. These would cater to different driving needs and customer fractions.
The introduction of the Urban Electric SUV aligns with Toyota’s broader goal of expanding its vehicle portfolio across the ICE, hybrid and EV landscapes. The company aims to cater to a wider audience in India.
Expected launch: H2, 2025
