The condition of highways and roads is improving in many parts of the country. The current government is investing heavily in expanding existing highways and constructing new ones. All of this is being done to make life easier for road users. While construction is ongoing in some areas, other parts of the country still have roads in a pathetic condition. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan might have recently realized this when his Innova Crysta got stuck in a huge pothole in Jharkhand.

The video was shared by ANI on their X profile. In the video, we see the Union Minister’s Toyota Innova Crysta on a road with several water-filled potholes. The vehicle is stalled in the middle of a puddle and unable to move. The driver likely wasn’t aware of the large potholes in the area and drove the MPV directly into one.
Usually, vehicles of Union Ministers are accompanied by pilot vehicles, and local police often provide security. According to the caption, the minister had arrived in Jharkhand’s Baharagora region for a public rally. It was raining when the MPV got stuck in the pothole. The pilot vehicle, a Maruti Gypsy, can be seen in front of the MPV.
The driver of the Innova Crysta may have been following the pilot vehicle too closely. The Gypsy managed to cross the pothole without issue, but that wasn’t the case with the Innova Crysta. It’s unclear whether the MPV stalled or got stuck in one of the potholes. Regardless of the reason, the vehicle was not moving.
Security officers rushed to the vehicle to ensure the minister’s safety. One of the security staff members, holding an umbrella, opened the door and asked the minister to exit. The video ends there, but it’s likely the minister was transferred to one of the backup cars or a pilot vehicle behind them.
While the minister likely continued his trip, it’s unclear how the driver of the Innova Crysta managed to get the MPV out. The driver’s side of the MPV was completely submerged in the pothole, and water may have entered the driver’s cabin.
The poor condition of roads in many cities is partly due to ongoing highway construction. However, this particular pothole seems to have worsened over the years due to a lack of attention from the authorities. We hope that authorities notice this section of the road and do proper maintenance work so that no common man, politician, minister or VIP has to suffer in future.
Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari made a statement during a public appearance, threatening operators responsible for poorly maintained sections of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. He warned that the government would not spare them.
He mentioned that they would ensure the bank guarantees of those responsible for substandard work would be forfeited, and the operators would be blacklisted, preventing them from applying for new tenders. Nitin Gadkari also imposed a hefty ₹50 lakh fine on the contractor responsible for the damaged section of the newly constructed Amritsar-Jamnagar expressway.
