The manufacturer is set to enter the Indian electric vehicle segment with the iD4, which is expected to be available by December 2024 or early 2025. This premium EV will likely be priced around Rs 65 lakh and will serve as Volkswagen’s flagship in the country. Based on the VW MEB platform, it will offer two battery pack choices—52 kWh and 77 kWh—delivering ranges of approximately 340 km and 500 km, respectively. Alongside a streamlined, futuristic exterior, it will have a sophisticated interior with a large infotainment screen and several features and tech including ADAS.

Taigun Facelift

The hot-selling Taigun compact SUV is slated for a significant facelift, which may launch in early 2025 or possibly by the end of this year. Key updates will include refreshed front and rear bumpers, updated headlights, and taillights. Additionally, the SUV will also receive a panoramic sunroof and Level 2 ADAS.

The engine lineup remains unchanged, with the Taigun continuing to offer 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter turbo petrol engines, producing 118 bhp and 150 bhp, respectively. Both manual and automatic (6AT and 7DSG) transmissions will likely be available. The facelift is expected to give the Taigun’s price a notable hike, due to the additional features and upgrades being offered.

Volkswagen Tayron 5-Seater:

In 2025, Volkswagen also plans to launch the Tayron five-seater SUV in the Indian market, aiming to compete with premium models like the Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail. This SUV is intended to replace the existing Tiguan, which has struggled in terms of sales. The new SUV will bring a more modern design and more comfortable, feature-rich cabin.

In several international markets, VW Tayron is offered with both 2.0-litre turbo petrol and diesel engines, though the Indian version will likely feature petrol engine alone. To keep costs in check and give it a proper pricing, Volkswagen could bring the Tayron as CKD units and assemble it locally.

Tayron 7-Seater:

Volkswagen will also introduce a seven-seater version of the Tayron, based on the MQB Evo platform. It will sit where the now-discontinued Tiguan Allspace used to be. The Allspace, for those who do not know it yet, was the 7-seater guise of Tiguan.

The Tayron, set to launch in 2025, will feature the same 2.0-litre petrol hybrid powertrain as the five-seater version. Likely to be priced between Rs 35-40 lakh, it will compete with the Toyota Fortuner, MG Gloster, and the new Ford Endeavour. It will also be brought to India as CKD units.

Sub-Compact SUV: Aiming India’s High-Volume Segment

Volkswagen is also developing a sub-4m SUV to compete in the highly competitive Indian market. The launch is expected by 2026. Built on the MQB A0 IN platform, which underpins Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus, as well as the recently launched Skoda Kylaq. This model will, in fact, be the VW version of the Kylaq, and go against the likes of Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet when launched.

It will likely have the familiar 1.0 turbo petrol engine (1.0 TSI). This could produce similar power and torque figures as the Kylaq. This sub-4m SUV has the potential to give Volkswagen sales the boost it deserves. What VW needs to get right is the pricing. If they do a smart price game like Skoda did with the Kylaq, it will be easy for Volkswagen to gain volumes with this product.
