Volkswagen’s New Affordable Sub-Taigun Compact SUV: First Teasers Out

Volkswagen as a brand has been in the news for the last couple of days. While we have reports about the manufacturer closing their first-ever factory in Germany on one side, we have reports about an upcoming car from Volkswagen from the other side of the world. It looks like Volkswagen is planning to launch a smaller SUV that will sit under the T-Cross and other models that they sell internationally. The SUV is expected to be unveiled at the world’s biggest music festival, the 2024 Rock In Rio. As per recent reports, the car has already reached Rio, and we have a few leaked images that give us a glimpse of the SUV.

Volkswagen is currently tight-lipped about this product. The images seen here have been shared by Auto Esporte on their website. We haven’t heard any official confirmation from them about this particular SUV.

Volkswagen probably chose the music festival as a venue to unveil their plans, as they are sponsoring the event in Rio de Janeiro. The SUV is expected to come with a design that is inspired by other bigger SUVs from the family.

The report mentions that Volkswagen might offer the A0 SUV with a front fascia inspired by their recently launched Nivus coupe SUV. The main attraction of this A0 SUV is that it is going to be an SUV that will sit under the T-Cross, which looks identical to the Taigun sold in India. From the leaked images, we see smoked LED tail lamps and a sleek yet signature Volkswagen design.

It looks like the upcoming SUV is going to be a sub-4 meter SUV. Volkswagen India, during our recent interaction, denied that they have any plans to launch a sub-4 meter SUV in India as they are concentrating on the premium segment. However, with the recent reports and images in place, it looks like Volkswagen will be introducing this smaller SUV internationally.

If they launch a sub-4 meter SUV internationally, we can expect a version of this SUV in India, as that would help them fill the gap created by the Volkswagen Polo. Skoda recently announced the name of their sub-4 meter SUV as Kylaq, and the SUV is expected to launch in the market in early 2025.

Volkswagen’s A0 SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.0-liter TSI engine, which we have seen in the lower variants of the Taigun and Virtus. We cannot confirm at the moment whether Volkswagen would launch this as their entry-level SUV in India sometime in the future. If they do, they’ll have to price the SUV competitively as this is an extremely competitive segment.

We hope to know more about this upcoming SUV in the coming weeks. The Skoda Kylaq will be positioned below the Kushaq SUV and is expected to get a similar styling to the compact SUV.

Skoda recently mentioned that they are looking for local vendors to increase the amount of localization in the SUV, and this way they aim to be able to price the SUV in a competitive way.
