Snapshot: South Korean automaker Hyundai is readying up a compact SUV based on the Hyundai Curb concept. The compact SUV will be launched in India in 2015. The SUV has been spotted testing extensively in South Korea, India and most recently, China. The new Hyundai will finally address the South Korean car maker’s long un-addressed void of not having a compact SUV option at a time when every automaker worth its salt has a presence in this fast growing segment.
The compact SUV that Hyundai is building will be based on a new platform that will also play host to a 6 seat MPV. The MPV will also be eventually launched in the Indian car market. The latest spyshots of the Hyundai compact SUV, which has been spotted testing in China, indicate rear air conditioning vents, and three headrests and three seat belts on the rear seat. Therefore, the Hyundai Compact SUV is likely to be positioned as a five seater.
Reports floating on the interweb suggest that the Hyundai Compact SUV could feature a 2,570 mm wheelbase and carry the iX25 nameplate. The SUV is likely to be positioned below that the Tuscon/iX35. Reportedly, the SUV will make its debut in China, at the upcoming 2014 Beijin Motor Show in April. Expect both petrol and turbo diesel engines to be offered on the new Hyundai compact SUV and MPV.
Manual and automatic gearboxes are likely to be made available on the petrol powered versions while the diesel engined model could make do with a manual gearbox. A monocoque body and front wheel drive layout will be standard. The 2015 Hyundai compact SUV will take on the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster.
