Test mules of the Mahindra S101 compact SUV are being spotted on an everyday basis. The sub-4 meter SUV will hit the production line in 2015, and is expected to be priced and positioned close to the 5 lakh rupee mark. At this price point, the S101 compact SUV will be served up as an alternate to B-Segment hatchbacks sold in India. The S101 will feature a monocoque bodyshell and a front wheel drive layout. The compact SUV will be shorter than the Mahindra Quanto and is also likely to be much more fuel efficient due to its front wheel drive layout. CarToq has put together renders of the S101 compact SUV.

The S101 will be one of the two SUVs that Mahindra is developing in association with Ssangyong. In 2015, Mahindra will also launch the ladder frame based U301 MUV, a replacement to the ultra successful Bolero range. In 2016, the compact SUV will be followed by a larger, better equipped crossover code-named the S102. By the end of 2016, Mahindra will have a new line of compact SUVs, which are expected to lead the Indian utility vehicle giant’s new product onslaught. While the S101 will be pitted against B-Segment hatchbacks, the S102 crossover will be a Ford EcoSport rival. The U301 Bolero replacement will cater to buyers looking for more utility.

The S101 compact SUV will be sold with a new petrol engine from an engine range that Mahindra and Ssangyong are jointly developing. A turbo diesel engine lifted from the Quanto is expected to be the other engine option for the S101. An interesting aspect about the S101 concerns its seating. An innovative 3+3 seating layout with capacity for 6 adults is what Mahindra is said to be considering for the new SUV. A wide track and a dashboard mounted gear shift lever will be two major features that are expected to liberate additional room to squeeze in the third passenger up front. In a sub-4 meter form factor, the S101 promises to be a one of a kind product, what with its 6 seat layout.
