Toyota dealer sources close to CarToq indicate that new variants of the Fortuner SUV will arrive into India in January 2015. The new variants of the Fortuner will sit at two extreme ends of the SUV’s Indian line up, attracting more buyers. While one variant of the Fortuner will use a smaller, 2.5 liter-4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, the new top-end variant will offer a 5 speed automatic transmission on the 4 wheel drive equipped SUV.
The smaller engined Fortuner will be the new base variant of the SUV, aiming for value conscious buyers who are interested mainly in the badge value and imposing looks that the SUV offers. The 2.5 liter D4D turbo diesel motor, essentially an uptuned version of the Innova’s diesel engine, will features a 143 Bhp-343 Nm state of tune. The higher horsepower and torque ratings are courtesy a variable geometry turbocharger.
The new base variant will be sold with a rear wheel drive layout. The top-end automatic variant will retain the 3 liter D4D turbodiesel mill in 171 Bhp-343 Nm state of tune, along with the four wheel drive system. While the base variant could be pegged at around 21 lakh rupees, the new-top end variant of the Fortuner is likely to sport an ex-showroom price tag just shy of the 25 lakh rupee mark.
The Fortuner is India’s best selling luxury SUV that runs rings around its competition in terms of sales. The SUV is based on the rugged Toyota Hilux pick up truck’s underpinnings. Using a ladder frame chassis, the IMV platform based Fortuner is quite a capable machine both on and off the road. While the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is the only SUV that currently mounts a semblance of a challenge to the Fortuner in terms of sales, the upcoming 2015 Ford Endeavour is a vehicle to watch out for.
