General Motors (GM) India has launched the diesel version of its hatchback, the Chevrolet Beat. The Beat diesel has a claimed mileage of 24 kmpl and is one of the cheapest diesel hatchbacks on offer in India.
The Beat diesel starts from Rs. 4.25 lakh for the base variant and goes up to Rs. 5.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-end variant. The Beat diesel is available in three variants: PS, LS and LT. The Beat diesel is powered by a 936 cc, 3-cylinder “Smartech” diesel engine that produces 58 PS of power at 4000 rpm and 150 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
The Beat may not be as powerful as its competitors but it provides immense value at this price. And its claimed mileage of 24 kmpl is well above its rivals such as Ford Figo (20 kmpl) and Maruti Suzuki Ritz (18 kmpl). We have already analyzed the Beat’s pricing with its rivals such as the Ford Figo and Maruti Suzuki Ritz. Here we take a look at what this car offers in terms of style, features and gadgets.
Dynamic Front: The Beat is dynamic and funky-styled hatchback that would appeal to younger buyers. The twin-barrel designs of the headlamps go well with the chrome-rimmed fog lamps that are integrated into ‘shark-fin’ shaped bezels in the front bumper. The roof rails help to enhance the Beat’s sporty road stance.e.
Stylish Rear: The twin-barrel design of the headlamps is complimented by similarly designed tail lamps. The well-sculpted rear bumpers give the Beat a wide appearance. The rear number plate sits smugly in a trapezoidal section on the boot lid. There is also a rear wiper on the top-end variants
Smart Design: The Beat has smart design elements such as the recessed rear door handles. This makes the Beat’s side profile look like a two door hatch while it actually features four doors. The brand’s trademark, dual, dynamic front grille gives a bold new look to the Beat.
Radical interiors: The Beat diesel has a radically new interior design layout just like the funky exterior. The unique steering column mounted instrument cluster has a LED back light analog speedometer, LCD digital tachometer. The six-spoke alloy wheels add a nice touch to the car’s looks. The Beat’s steering wheel is tilt-adjustable offering flexible driving positions.
Central console: The central console has graphic infotainment display and includes AC controls, CD player with MP3, radio, USB and Aux-in port. The power window buttons are integrated on to the driver-side door handle for easy maneuvering.
Seats and space: The Beat with its small interior dimensions, is best suited for four adults. The 60:40 rear seat split helps carrying more luggage, while the high ground clearance of 175 mm saves the car’s under belly from scratches.
Safety: The top-end variant, Beat LT (O) comes with ABS and dual airbags. ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) avoids wheels locking when driving through slippery road surfaces while the dual airbags and front seat belts with load limiters ensure safety during collision.
Further GM India boasts of the Intelidrive technology it offers with the Beat diesel. This technology consists of Pro-vario assist featherlite EPS (Electronic Power Steering), Intelligent Launch support system, advanced insta-torque boost, smart engine& clutch protection mode and gas charged rebound tuned suspension.
The Beat diesel is one of the most complete small cars now, with the pricing approach the company has taken. Will it hit the sales of other small cars, especially the petrol small cars? Share your views.
