The Indian automobile market is one of the biggest in the world. While in the recent past, the market saw a decline in the sales but it is slowly coming to the tracks. Earlier this year, two international manufacturers entered the Indian market, namely Kia and MG Motors and both of them are doing exceptionally well on the sales chart. In the future, a lot of international manufacturers are planning to enter the Indian market. One of these most prominent brands is the French manufacturer, Citroen.
A part of Groupe PSA, Citroen will be launched in the Indian market next year. Their first vehicle will be a premium SUV, which is likely to be the C5 AirCross, which has been spotted testing on the Indian roads already. The French manufacturer will launch one new vehicle based on the same platform every year as per the plans.
In an interview to Business Standard, Roland Bouchara, senior vice president sales and marketing, India, PCA Automobiles India Ltd, said that their first vehicle will be launched in the second half of 2020. It should be noted that the all-new car is likely to be launched by the festive season. The festive season is the time when the sales of the vehicles go up as most of the customers plan to buy their vehicles around that time.
The Citroen C5 AirCross will be launched as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) but there will be a certain level of localisation to ensure that the price of the vehicle remains competitive. The C5 AirCross is a mid-size SUV that will take on the likes of Jeep Compass in the Indian market. At a later date, Citroen is planning to increase the localisation to about 98%. Citroen will be present in the mass-segment and will not only cater to the premium customers in India.
The C5 AirCross is underpinned by the EMP2 platform and design-wise, it looks unique. The car is longer than the Jeep Compass in length but it is not as big as the Mahindra XUV500. Since the Indian market is quite price-sensitive, we can definitely expect the brand to delete a few features to make it affordable and suitable for the Indian market. Internationally, the Citroen C5 AirCross comes with a long list of features.
The vehicle gets a panoramic sunroof, full-LED headlamps, wireless phone charging, 8.0-inch touchpanel infotainment screen, emergency assistance and a hydraulic suspension system. The features like hydraulic suspension will not feature in the Indian version though. The car will get both petrol and diesel engine options for the Indian market. The car will be priced at around Rs 16 lakhs in the market.
