Compact sedans like the Indigo eCS have already proved that the concept of a compact sedan can work in India.Riding that very wave various car manufacturers are launching their own compact sedans. Here we take a closer look at the compact sedan you will see at the Auto Expo.
Tata Manza CS
Expected unveiling: January 5
Looks: The Manza CS (Compact Sedan) will look identical to the present Manza up to C-pillar after which the lengthy boot will be shortened in order to meet the small car norms (below 4 meter length). We can safely assume the Manza CS to be better looking with its compact dimensions unlike the existing which seems to look long, especially when viewed from sides. The interior of the Manza CS is expected to carry over the same upholstery and dashboard as the present model.
Performance: Presently, the Manza is powered by a 1368 cc Saffire90 petrol engine and 1248 cc Quadrajet90 diesel engine that both make 90 PS of peak power. But the 1.4 litre Safire 90 may not make it into the Manza CS because, as per government norms, small cars (under 4 meters) cannot have petrol engines of size greater than 1.2 litre. Hence, expect the Manza CS to be powered by only the 1.2 litres Safire 65 petrol motor. Tata Motors may also mull over introducing the 71 bhp, 1.4 litre CR4 common rail diesel motor in the Manza CS which currently powers the Indigo CS.
Mileage: Expect the Manza CS to return a mileage of around 22 kmpl for the diesel variant and around 17 kmpl for the petrol variant.
Variants and price details: The Manza CS will likely come in variants such as LS, LX and VX (similar to variants of Indigo CS). The price of Manza CS is expected to be in the range of Rs. 4.5 – 6 lakh or roughly Rs. 40,000 less than the Manza.
Mahindra Verito CS
Expected Unveiling: January 5
Looks: The Verito CS will look identical to the Verito sedan except for the boot. The Verito CS will have a length below four meters in order to gain the excise duty sops for small cars. The interiors of the Verito CS will likely retain those of the Verito sedan.
Performance: The Verito compact sedan will likely be powered by a 1.5 litre dCI engine that churns out 65 bhp of power and 160 Nm of torque.
Mileage: As per ARAI ratings, the present Verito diesel sedan has a fuel economy of 21.03 km/litre and we can expect a similar figure from the compact sedan.
Variants and price details: The Verito compact sedan will likely be offered in three trim levels D2, D4 and D6 similar to the Verito sedan. The price of the Verito CS is expected to be in the range of Rs. 5.50 – 6.50 lakh or in other words, roughly Rs. 40,000 less than the Verito.
Honda Brio sedan
Expected unveiling: January 5
Looks: The Brio sedan will retain the exterior design of the Brio up to the C-pillar after which a boot will be seamlessly integrated into the body.
Performance: The Brio sedan will likely be powered by the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that powers the hatchback. This motor makes produces 87 bhp of max power and 109 Nm of max torque. Honda is developing small diesel engine to power its small cars such as the Honda Jazz. This diesel engine may also be used in the Brio sedan.
Mileage: The ARAI-certified mileage of the Brio sedan could be around 17 kmpl.
Variants and prices: Honda may likely offer the Brio sedan in three variants: S, M and T. The price of the Brio sedan could be around Rs. 1 lakh more than the Brio hatchback. Expect the Brio sedan to be priced in the range of Rs. 5 – 7 lakh.
Chevrolet Sail sedan
Expected Launch: January 5
Looks: The Sail sedan will look similar to the Sail sedan sold by GM in China. The bow tie grille, which is now familiar and common among other Chevrolet cars such as Beat and Cruze, now decorates the Sail sedan as well. The side profile of the Sail will have strong crease lines starting from the middle of the front wheel fender and goes all the way to meet the tail lamp cluster. The rear of the car has a bland boot door but stylish side swept tail lamp cluster.
Performance: The Sail is expected to be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol motor that powers the Chevrolet Beat. This 4-pot engine develops 79.5 bhp and 108 Nm of torque and mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The diesel version of the Sail may get the 1.3-litre Multijet engine from Fiat alike the Maruti Dzire and the Tata Manza. The Sail diesel will likely be the volume driver for Chevrolet in its segment.
Mileage: Expect the mileage of Sail petrol in the range of 13 – 16 kmpl while that of the diesel in the range of 17 – 21 kmpl.
Variants and prices: The key proposition for the Chevrolet Sail will be its pricing and the features offered. The Sail will likely have higher local components to help GM price it competitively. We expect the price to be in the range of Rs. 5 lakh – 7.5 lakh.
