CRAZY car transformation: Humble Mahindra Thar to mighty Jeep Wrangler SUV

Love the Jeep Wrangler but can’t afford one? There’s help at hand. Azad Customs has come with the Trip-X, which is essentially a Mahindra Thar wearing Jeep Wrangler clothes. This build uses the  original body kit of the Wrangler, a straight fit on the Thar, considering that the latter is based on the CJ5 (Civilia Jeep 5) design. Apart from this kit, Azad customs has also fitted a hard-top on the vehicle, for a quiet ride, and additional crash safety.

How much?

Rs. 4.5-5 lakh rupees is the cost of the customization job, excluding the donor Mahindra Thar CRDe. This price includes the metal hard-top, optional fitments such as a sunroof, after-market shock absorbers and a leatherette dashboard. The whole job will take 45 days, and the vehicle will have to be sent to Azad Customs’ workshop in Delhi. Under the hood, there’s no change. The Wrangler Thar, or Thar Trip-X as it’s called, is powered by a 2.5 liter CRDe turbodiesel engine with 105 Bhp of peak power and 247 Nm of peak torque.

A 5 speed manual gearbox is standard and so is a 4 wheel drive transfer case with low and high ratios. The Thar sold in India currently features an Eaton-sourced mechanical locking differential on the rear axle. The Thar CRDe is priced at Rs. 9.11 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

On the other hand, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which is directly imported to India as a completely built unit (CBU), is offered with 3.6 liter V6 petrol (280 Bhp-370 Nm) and 2.8 liter turbodiesel (197 Bhp-460 Nm) engines. Both engines get 5 speed automatic gearboxes, and four wheel drive transfer cases are standard. The SUV also offers critical safety features such as ABS and Airbag – both missing on the Thar.
