While the Mahindra Scorpio has built up a reputation as a rugged workhorse, primarily in smaller towns and rural areas, it is also infamous for illegal use by criminals in India. In the past, we have seen several criminals and repetitive offenders of the law using Mahindra Scorpios for illegal means like money laundering and trafficking of prohibited items. And now, the new Mahindra Scorpio-N has come to light for being used for the same kind of purpose.
Recently, the West Bengal Police caught a few people who were trying to transport extortion money in a Mahindra Scorpio-N. In a YouTube video from Raftaar 7811, which describes this incident in detail, we came to know that the offenders caught by the police were trying to smuggle the extortion money worth Rs 98 lakh in a black-coloured Mahindra Scorpio-N. The entire money was packed in different black polythene packets and was stuffed within the spare wheel of the Scorpio-N.
In the Mahindra Scorpio-N, the spare wheel is mounted beneath the rear profile of the SUV, just like in the standard version of the Scorpio, which was recently relaunched as Scorpio Classic. The Scorpio-N was stopped at a regular check post while the West Bengal police were checking all the vehicles passing through it.
During the regular checking, nothing was found inside the vehicle. However, the police team deployed at the check post was clever enough to check the spare wheel. When they took the spare wheel out of the Scorpio-N and took the tyre out of the wheel, they were shocked to see so much money stuffed in it.
Occupants of Scorpio-N arrested
The police team immediately nabbed all the people who were in the Scorpio-N at that time and has taken the SUV into its custody. A case of smuggling and extortion of black money has been registered on the registered user of the Scorpio-N and all the culprits who were inside the SUV during the search operation at the check post.
The Mahindra Scorpio is a popular brand among overpowering personalities across India, as the SUV is popular for its intimidating road presence, especially in black. In this latest version, the Scorpio-N, Mahindra has tried to uplift the image of the Scorpio brand as a more premium SUV, with new-age design elements and features. The Scorpio-N was launched in June 2022 with two engine options – a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine, both of which are available with 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
All the engine options offer the six-speed manual transmission as standard. The higher-spec diesel and the turbo-petrol engine are also available with six-speed automatic transmission. The Scorpio is a rear-wheel drive as standard. The higher-spec diesel variants also get AWD with mechanical rear-locking differentials, ESP-based brake-locking front differential, an independent front suspension and a five-link rear suspension.
