Dilip Chhabria has big plans of moving from being just an automobile designer to becoming a full-fledged carmaker, making niche sportscars and a new super SUV, according to reports. Last year at the Auto Expo 2012, he showcased his completely built-from-scratch sportscar, the DC Avanti, which would likely have a relatively affordable price tag of just Rs. 30 lakh.
Now, his company DC Design apparently plans to set up a small plant at Sanand in Gujarat in 2014, with an investment of about Rs. 60 crore to manufacture the DC Avanti. At present DC has a facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra. Initial production of the DC Avanti will be in Maharashtra with a target of 300 cars to be delivered by March 2014, with an official launch in December 2013. The DC Avanti is a mid-engined sportscar with rear-wheel drive. It will be powered by a 2-litre Ford Ecoboost engine that puts out 240 bhp of power – more than enough to beat many cars that cost two to three times more. It will come with a six-speed manual transmission which will please enthusiasts, and can apparently do 0-100 kmph in under 7 seconds, which is good enough considering its price tag. (In comparison an Audi R8 or Lamborghini Gallardo can do the same speed in about 3.5 seconds, but they cost about 10 times more!). DC plans to make about 4000 units of this car totally before bringing out a newer model. Also see: Driving two Lamborghini Gallardos on the track
DC is also planning to cash in on the craze for SUVs in India and will launch a super SUV sometime next year. The vehicle may be showcased at the next Auto Expo in 2014. Besides that, the company is also planning to open about 16 dealerships around the country. These dealerships will sell the Avanti and super SUV, as well as take customization orders from customers for all other cars, which has been DC’s business mainstay till date.
