DCW sends notice to Transport Dept. because of ‘SEX’ number plate

In the past few days, a number plate story has gone viral on the internet. A Delhi girl got a number plate that comprised the letters ‘SEX’ in it. Because of this, she was being bullied. Now, the Delhi Commission for Women has issued a notice to the Transport Department because of the number plate. They want the number plate to be changed because she is facing “severe harassment”.

Swati Maliwal, chief of Delhi Commission for Women said, “It’s very unfortunate that people can be so petty and abusive that the girl is having to face so much harassment. I have given four days time to the Transport Department to resolve this issue so that the girl doesn’t suffer anymore. I have asked the Transport Department to submit the total number of vehicles which have been registered in this allotment series containing the term ‘SEX’,”

Delhi Commission for Women has also asked the Transport department for the total number of vehicles that were registered under this same series. Till now, the transport department has not replied but a senior official has reported that the series was stopped after the issue came to their notice.

The senior official told PTI that anyone who has got the ‘SEX’ number plate can get it changed. The official said, “The registration number was system generated and the entire series was stopped after the matter came to the department’s notice. For others, who have also got registration numbers in this series, we can change them on a case to case basis, if requested,” The proper steps to get the number plate series changes are not yet disclosed.

How did ‘SEX’ number plate cause an issue?

A Delhi girl was given the number ‘DL 3S EX ****’ for her scooty. Because of this, the neighbours started mocking her and started passing rude comments. They called her shameless and the girl was not able to ride the scooty.

Scooty is a gift from her father. The girl is studying fashion design and has to travel from Janakpuri to Noida via metro. It took a lot of time to travel and the metro used to get crowded. So, travelling via a personal vehicle made sense.

When she started facing issues, his father requested the dealership to change the number but the dealer declined. They said that many other people have received the same series of number plates and his daughter is “not the queen of the world.” It is important to note that the dealership does not have the authority to change the number assigned to the vehicle. The number plate was issued by Sarai Kale Khan Regional Transport Office.

RTO’s pattern

RTO follows a pattern with the number plates. So, for ‘DL 3S EX’, DL stands for Delhi, ‘3’ indicates the district and ‘S’ denotes that the vehicle is a two-wheeler. Then there is “EX” which is the current series being followed by the RTO. Usually, the series would continue till the RTO runs out of the “EX” series but Transport Department says that they will no longer be using the “EX” series.
