Last month we told you that the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 sports car which gathered its fame from the movie franchise “Back to the Future” will be making a return to the market in an EV Avtar. And today we bring to a few more of the key details of this legendary automobile and share with you what we know so far about this returning icon. Last month, Delorean Motor Company tweeted, “The Future was never promised. Reimagine today. Sign up for the premiere of the DeLorean in 2022.” and shared a teaser video in which the silhouette of the prominent gull-wing doors can be seen forming on a black background.
So without any further ado let’s jump right into what we know about the DMC -12 so far.

The All-Electric Delorean
As we mentioned it previously the next generation of the Delorean sports car will be an all-electric vehicle. It will ditch the ICE along with its reputation of being a slow car – the previous model was notoriously underpowered and many customers complained of it taking a decade to reach high speeds. In the tweets from last month, DMC used #DeLoreanEVolved, however it is very unlikely that it will be the production name of the model. According to DMC CEO Joost de Vries, the car will be offered with a large 100kWh battery pack that will allow it to go at least 300 miles.
In comparison, the all-electric sedan from Tesla – the Model S that weighs around 2494 kg uses a 99kWh battery and it still manages to provide a range of 405 miles on a single full charge. So this begs us to believe that the upcoming DMC car with its two-seater sports car layout could easily outrun the Tesla on a single full charge. Although it is to be noted that de Vries mentioned that it is unlikely that the car will reach the 500 miles per charge mark.
The new DeLorean will be structurally similar to Tesla’s “skateboard” design. The electric motors in the Tesla are located between the wheels on each axle and the battery pack is located in the floor between the front and back wheels, encompassing the entire width of the car. DMC Chief Marketing Officer Troy Beetz said, “You could assume that with most EV sports cars, all-wheel drive would be a must as would a flat-floor battery,”
Exterior Design Language
The previous iteration of the Delorean automobile was designed by the legendary Italian design and engineering company Italdesign Giugiaro. And continuing the tradition this upcoming model will also be designed by the same company. Italdesign founder and acclaimed automotive designer Giorgetto Giugiaro will be designing the new vehicle just like he designed the original model. Although the company has stated that the new vehicle will depart from the design of the original vehicle it will still retain the signature gullwing-style doors the original did.
Delorean in a tweet last month said, the next generation DeLorean will make its global design debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Monterey Car Week on August 21, 2022.
Pricing
According to a company spokesperson, the new Delorean price on the low end could be around the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air’s price of $136k and $169k respectively. While on the higher end it will be below the cheapest McLaren that is presently available which is the 540C at $185k. Considering the original model was priced at $25,000, which in 2022 dollars is about $80k, the price of the new models seems a little too exorbitant, however, only time will tell if it’s worth the amount or not.
Launch Date
In terms of a release timeline, de Vries during an interview with a media outlet revealed that initial customer deliveries might come as early as the end of next year, but DMC definitely wants to have pre-production cars on the road by 2023.
