Hyundai’s original tall-boy hatchback, the Santro, is a making a fresh come back into the entry level hatchback market in India. As per our sources, the Korean auto maker is planning to pre-pone the launch of the all-new 2018 Santro to August as compared to Diwali season as reported earlier. Code named AH2, the new Santro will be priced from just under Rs 3 lakh. Looking at a purchasing a new small car soon? Scroll down for more information in that case!
The new Santro will also be a replacement for the aging Eon as the latter will not meet the upcoming Indian safety norms. The new Santro will be based on the old i10 platform and will also use the original i10’s 1086cc engine with approximately 70 bhp of power and 100 Nm of torque. Ofcourse the engine will be re-tuned extensively for modern day usage. On offer will be Hyundai’s first ever AMT (automated manual transmission) as well as a 5-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai will also offer optional factory fitted LPG or CNG versions. The engine will be tuned to meet the current emission norms and will offer certified fuel economy of over 22 kmpl.
The new Hyundai Santro will also get segment leading features and could offer best in class space. Consumers can look forward to a semi digital display, driver-side airbag as standard, touch-screen infotainment system on the top-end trim levels and ample practical touches like storage spaces and big door pads. At 1560 mm, the new Santro will be 10 mm taller than the old i10 and is reportedly 10-15 mm wider too.
The new 2018 Santro, when launched, will lock horns with the Maruti Alto K10, Renault Kwid and Tata Tiago. The Santro brand name will complete 20 years this year and though the company has not officially acknowledged this name for the upcoming hatchback, the strong brand following makes us believe that the ‘Santro’ tag will surely make a comeback in a few months time.
The new Hyundai Santro should offer a well rounded package for first time buyers. It will not be the cheapest, but we can expect high quality levels, long list of features and a comfortable drive. Stay tuned for more.
