Developing a crossover/compact SUV from ground up costs time and money. While Fiat might have the luxury of money, it simply doesn’t have time to wait for an India-specific crossover, especially at a time when the compact SUV market is booming. Ergo, the Fiat Avventura crossover styled hatchback, a unique car species whose other representatives include the likes of the Toyota Etios Cross and the Volkswagen Cross Polo.
Like the Etios Cross and the Cross Polo, the Avventura derives its platform from a hatchback. Butch styling bits have been added, along with additional equipment on the inside and a tall ground clearance on the outside. The platform sharing means that the investment to put together a faux crossover that can satisfy the masses’ requirement of a high riding urban crossover at a competitive price tag, will be minimal at best.
Here’s a full image gallery of the production version Fiat Avventura, due for a launch in early October.
From the gallery, it is evident that most bits that were seen in the concept version of the Avventura at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, remain true to form. The Avventura is essentially a Punto EVO on stilts and rugged styling elements. The crossover styled hatchback will use the 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine in 91 Bhp-209 Nm state of tune, as a staple. A 1.4 liter-4 cylinder petrol engine (89 Bhp-115 Nm) could also be offered.
A key change on the Avventura, when compared with the concept, is a 5 speed gearbox in place of a six speed unit seen on the concept. The dashboard gets gauges with compass and inclinometers, underscoring the Avventura’s positioning as a crossover that can take a little bit of the rough with the smooth. Interiors see a revamp with beige bits/all black finish for the dashboard and seats making way for a tan-black dual tone finish.
