Its official! Fiat is going to launch the Jeep Cherokee SUV in India in 2013! The news was confirmed at the ongoing 2012 Paris Motor Show. The Grande Cherokee is a vehicle from Jeep, which is now a part of Fiat.
Internationally the Cherokee is offered in 6 variants called; Laredo, Laredo X, Limited, Overland, Overland Summit and SRT8. Fiat will however only introduce the lower end variants in India to tap the market.
The India bound Cherokee is expected to sport a 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 motor. It will come with overhead camshafts, Variable Valve Timing and a five-speed auto-box with Electronic Range Select. Also see: Most expensive SUVs in India
Fiat will bring in the vehicle to India via the CBU route giving it a massive price tag of around Rs.45 lakh-Rs.50 lakh. It will compete with SUVs from BMW, Audi etc. However, only time will tell if Indian buyers are wiling to accept the Cherokee as an equally valued vehicle. Fiat will first strengthen their sales, service and dealership network before they launch the Cherokee in India. Once the Cherokee comes to India, Jeep will likely launch other models from its international line up such as the Patriot, Commander and Compass in India. Also see: 4 most value-for-money SUVs!
If Jeep succeeds in India, Chrysler and Dodge brands may also be brought to India. Fiat may be able to expand their grasp in India if Jeep finds a solid customer base in the country. At present Fiat India, sells only the Grande Punto and the Linea.
