Snapshot – The luxury SUV pack has already seen the mighty safe Volvo XC90 make landfall into India. More is to come in the second half of the year. Five new luxury SUVs have been lined up for launches in the next six months of the year. We round up each of them, and tell you what you need to know about these SUVs, while also giving you anticipated pricing levels so that you can work your budgets out.
The Audi Q7 is an all-new luxury crossover that will be the German automaker’s flagship SUV model until the Q8 arrives. The biggest story around the 2015 Audi Q7 is the 325 kilogram weight reduction this butch SUV has seen. Based on the second generation MLB platform, the new Q7 has already been spotted testing on multiple occassions in India. An official launch will happen during the festive season, and the vehicle will arrive into the country through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route. The 3 liter V6 turbo diesel engine (272 Bhp-600 Nm) and an eight speed automatic transmission, with standard all wheel drive, will be the technical specifications of this big luxury crossover. A price tag pegged between 65-70 lakh rupees is likely for the 3 liter TDI engined variant.
Land Rover Discovery Sport
The Freelander2 has been one of the most successful SUVs for Land Rover in countries around the world, and this model will soon be replaced by the sharper looking Discovery Sport. The new SUV is likely to make it’s India foray in August 2015. The Discovery Sport is larger than the Freelander2, and these increased dimensions make for a 7 seat layout. Initially, the 2.2 liter turbo diesel motor borrowed from the outgoing Freelander2 will move the new, entry level Land Rover, while the Ingenium range of turnocharged petrol and diesel motors are likely to be offered in due course of time. The Discovery Sport is expected to be about 10 % pricier than its predecessor, at about 45 lakh rupees. CKD import will be how this vehicle will arrive here.
The all-new, 2nd generation BMW X6 sport crossover made its show debut last year. This crossover will make its Indian debut in months from now. BMW India is likely to offer both the regular and M-badged versions of this high performance vehicle in the country. CBU import will be the standard choice for this low volume offering. The 3 liter, inline-6 cylinder twin turbo diesel engine with 313 Bhp-600 Nm outputs will power this crossover’s regular variants that will use an 8 speed automatic gearbox. The M-badged model will use the 4.4 liter -V8 twin turbo petrol engine with 552 Bhp and 680 Nm, and a 7 speed twin clutch automatic gearbox. The diesel variant is expected to carry a price tag of a little over 1 crore rupees.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer will be the largest and meanest looking luxury SUV in town, when it gets launched by the end of this year. India-testing has already begun with camouflaged examples of the vehicle already on the roads here. The massive SUV seats seven and comes with a 2.8 liter-4 cylinder turbo diesel motor with 200 Bhp-500 Nm on tap, making it the torquiest offering in its segment. The Trailblazer could be priced below the Captiva as General Motors is said to be contemplating CKD assembly for this massive sports ute. If the American automaker can price the Trailblazer close to the 20 lakh rupee mark or even slightly lower, the vehicle has a great shot at good numbers.
The all-new Ford Endeavour will be in the Indian market by the end of the year. The new SUV will replace its dated looking predecessor and is also expected to be priced at least 10 % higher considering the more powerful engines and the heavily updated feature list. The new sports utility vehicle will be assembled at Ford India’s Maramalainagar factory, off Chennai, through the CKD kit route. The interiors of the 2015 Endeavour adopt a premium design while new engines (2.2 liter-4 cylinder and 3.2 liter-5 cylinder) and transmissions (6 speed manual and automatic) will make the vehicle more sprightly than before. Expect pricing to start at about 24 lakh rupees.
