Five Upcoming Compact SUVs To Watch Out For

The next one year is an exciting time for car buyers in India seeking to bring home a compact SUV. Apart from the Ecosport-Duster-Terrano trio, five new compact SUVs will be launched/unveiled here over the next one year. We take a quick look at what’s coming up, and when.

When? Mid September

The Mahindra TUV300 is a ladder frame equipped, sub-4 meter compact SUV that was recently caught almost uncamouflaged. The TUV300 will use a new 1.5 liter mHawk 80 turbo diesel engine. 5 speed manual and automated manual transmissions will be on offer. A rear wheel drive layout will be standard even as a four wheel drive layout isn’t on the scheme of things.  The TUV300 will offer seven seats, and will be sold alongside the Mahindra Bolero.

What makes it special?

To be built at Chakan, the new Mahindra compact SUV will be aimed at buyers who want a more rugged vehicle than the likes of the Ford Ecosport and the Renault Duster. A sub-6 lakh rupee price tag is likely.

The Mahindra S101 codenamed vehicle will be a ‘Micro SUV’, thus spawning an all new segment. The S101 will feature s unique 3+3 seat layout, and a dashboard mounted gear shifter. In terms of positioning, the new Micro SUV will be Mahindra’s least priced utility vehicle, with prices likely to start under 5 lakh rupees. Both petrol and turbo diesel engines will be on offer and the S101 will use monocoque construction with a front wheel drive layout as standard fare.

What makes it special?

The S101 will be India’s first Micro SUV, which is expected to offer 5 speed manual and automated manual transmissions. A 6 seat layout and hatchback-like price tag are the vehicle’s other party tricks.

Five speed manual transmissions will drive the front wheels of the compact SUV, whose rivals will include the Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra TUV300.

What makes it special?

It’s Maruti Suzuki’s first sub-4 meter compact SUV, and the YBA is expected to be very competitively priced. It should bring forth all the strengths of the Maruti Suzuki brand including good resale value, fantastic after sales service, low maintenance costs and high fuel efficiency.

Tata Nexon

Tata Nexon

When? By the middle of next year

Tata Motors is likely to launch the Nexon crossover by the middle of next year. The Nexon, which was showcased as a concept at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, will be Tata Motors’ first sub-4 meter offering in the compact SUV segment. Turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines are expected to be on offer. Segment leading equipment could also be packed into the Nexon, just as Tata Motor did with the Zest compact sedan.

What makes it special?

Futuristic styling based on the Range Rover Evoque will dominate the headline surrounding the Nexon. The crossover is expected to be very competitively priced given the fact that Tata Motors needs a big volume compact SUV urgently.

Nissan Kicks

When? Auto Expo 2016/Early Next Year

Nissan showed a sub-4 meter compact SUV at last year’s Sau Paulo Motor Show. Next year’s Indian Auto Expo is expected to see the Kicks concept take a leap towards production. A production version of this compact SUV is likely to arrive at the 2016 Auto Expo. The actual launch of this SUV could happen by the end of next year. The Kicks will sit under the Terrano in terms of price and positioning. The 1.5 liter K9K turbo diesel engine seen on the Terrano and the Duster will also make it to the Kicks.

What makes it special?

The Kicks concept will be Nissan’s first sub-4 meter compact SUV. The vehicle, at least in concept guise, looks butch. With a 1.5 liter K9K turbo diesel engine in tow, it should be responsive and frugal too.
