Force Gurkha is one of the most popular off-roaders available in the Indian market. While Force is working on the all-new version, there are many who own the previous version of the Gurkha and are happy with the performance. The Gurkha takes on the Mahindra Thar head-on and it does get a metal hardtop, which the all-new Thar is missing out. However, is it capable as advertised? Force Gurkha water wading
The first video here shows the Force Gurkha entering a waterbody and crossing it without much problem. The water level even rises towards the top of the bonnet lid but there’s no stopping of the Force Gurkha and it goes around without any problem whatsoever, The Gurkha can be seen successfully coming out of the water and going straight for the flight of stairs.
The Gurkha starts climbing the stairs effortlessly and successfully does the job without scrapping the underbody even once. This shows the good approach angle, departure angle and breakover angle of the SUV. This is quite important while doing off-roading and ensures that the vehicle remains clear of any kind of obstacle.
This is the now-discontinued Gurkha that came with a 2.6-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. It produces a maximum power of 85 Bhp and peak torque of 230 Nm. The car comes with a 4X4 system and a low-ratio transfer case that makes the SUV extremely capable. The job of the low-ratio transfer case is to multiply the torque output to ensure that the vehicle gets out of the most sticky situations without any external help. This Gurkha is the pre-facelift version that was launched in around 2013.
Force Motors also offers a factory-fitted snorkel with the Gurkha that enables the Gurkha to go through a depth of 550mm without any problem. It also gets differential locks that help the vehicle get out of challenging situations. The differential lock supplies power only to the wheel that is not moving freely.
Can other SUVs do the same?
Yes, if an SUV offers a good water wading depth, it can go through deep water crossings without any problem. The new Thar offers a maximum wading depth of 650mm without any snorkel. Also, the high approach, departure and breakover angles play a major role while doing off-roading. Good approach angle ensures that the front bumper does not scrape while climbing an incline while a good departure ensures the same for the rear bumper while getting off from a downhill. A good breakover angle will ensure that your car’s underbody does not scrape and it does not get beached.
