Force Motors has been planning to launch an MPV in India, and earlier reports suggested that the MPV it would launch was based on the Mercedes Benz Viano – a large people-carrying van. However, from latest spy shots of the MPV, it does look like the Force Motors MPV will be based on an earlier Mercedes van called the Mercedes Vito, which was the predecessor to the Viano.
The Force Motors MPV has been caught testing and spy photos of it were posted on Team-BHP. When one looks at the overall shape of the vehicle under heavy camouflage seen testing, it does look like a lot more boxy like the earlier Mercedes Vito. Also the position of the headlamps and tail-lamps suggest that this MPV is based on the Vito and not the later generation Viano which has tall tail lamps running up to roof height. The headlamps and grille position too show it to be based on the W638 Mercedes V-class (Vito). Also read: Three most comfortable SUVs and MUVs between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh
The MPV space has been growing steadily in India with new players like Chevrolet’s Enjoy, Mahindra’s Quanto, Nissan Evalia and the Maruti Ertiga all adding to the choices available. The Maruti Ertiga has been a hit since its launch last year, selling about 6000 vehicles a month, and overtaking the Toyota Innova in sales. Also read: Seven seat SUVs and MPVs launched in 2012
This Force Motors MPV is expected to be launched sometime later next year. Force Motors had said it was looking at newer vehicle segments and it has been sourcing its designs and technology from Mercedes. The MPV could be powered by the same engine that powers the Force One SUV – the 2.2 litre Mercedes Benz sourced diesel engine with a five-speed manual transmission, which is reportedly a pretty decent unit. Force Motors larger vehicles like the Trax and Traveller have found favour with commercial operators and are known reliable people movers. This MPV could also appeal to private buyers looking for a large family vehicle up to 10 seats. It will reportedly be available in various seating options from a seven seater to a nine seater.
