Ford India has begun importing the Ka+ (Figo) sedan from Brazil, where the car is known as the Ka sedan. While the Ka+ sedan sold in Brazil measures over 4 meters in length, the Figo/Ka+ sold in India will be a compact sedan with a sub-4 meter length. The car will be launched in India next year, and will follow the 2015 Figo/Ka hatchback into the market here. Both the 2015 Figo hatchback and the Figo+ compact sedan will be built at Ford’s upcoming Sanand factory in Gujarat. Notably, Ford India also imported the 2015 Figo hatchbacks into India earlier this year.
Interestingly, Ford India has imported the Ka sedan with the 1.5 liter-4 cylinder petrol engine, the same Ti-VCT unit that does duty in the EcoSport crossover. For the Indian car market, expect this engine to be replaced by a smaller, non-turbo version of the EcoBoost, 1 liter motor in order to duck into excise duty norms. The 2015 Figo based compact sedan is also expected to be sold with the 1.5 liter-4 cylinder TDCI turbo diesel motor. The 2015 Figo based compact sedan will be based on a modified, European Fiesta platform, which also underpins the current generation Figo hatchback and Classic sedan.
Talking of the Classic sedan, the 2015 Figo based compact sedan is intended to replace the Classic in the Indian market. By slotting the Figo+/Ka sedan into the sub-4 meter length bracket, Ford India has lined up its first offering aimed at compact sedan buyers in India. The compact sedan segment is a big growth area in the Indian car market, with many B+ segment hatchback buyers opting to upgrade to compact sedans owing to the minimal price differential. Apart from Ford, Volkswagen India will launch a Polo/Vento PQ25 platform based compact sedan next year.
