Ford's Tata Harrier rival to use new Mahindra XUV500's platform

Ford’s Tata Harrier rival to use new Mahindra XUV500’s platform

Mahindra and Ford announced their partnership in the Indian market last year. There will be a lot of new cars that will be launched in the future due to the newly formed venture. The first product will be launched next year in the Indian market. Mahindra is working on the all-new XUV 500 in the Indian car market while Ford will make use of the same platform to launch its own product in the segment.

Mahindra has already started working on the all-new XUV 500 and it is currently codenamed as W601. It is expected to be unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo and launch will happen later next year. The all-new XUV 500 is based on an all-new new monocoque platform and it will also underpin Ford’s upcoming SUV from the same segment. Ford’s product has been codenamed as the W605 and it will be built in Mahindra’s Chakan plant near Pune.

The all-new Mahindra XUV 500 will continue to be a 7-seater vehicle while it is not known if Ford’s iteration would be a similar set-up. The local sourcing of parts for both the new upcoming SUVs has started. Mahindra XUV 500 has remained the king of the segment for a long time now. It has been challenged by the vehicles like Jeep Compass but XUV 500 has managed to keep a steady sales figure every month.

The Mahindra XUV 500 is expected to be designed completely different from Ford’s SUV to keep a clear difference between the two manufacturers. Mahindra is expected to get inputs from the Italian design firm and Mahindra-owned Pininfarina for the all-new XUV 500. Whereas the Ford SUV is expected to showcase true American SUV design and is expected to be bulkier. However, there is no information on how they would look like in the production guise. The test mules of both the upcoming SUV are expected to be spotted on the roads soon.

The segment is currently populated by the Mahindra XUV 500 and the Jeep Compass. Soon, Tata will launch the Harrier and international manufacturers like MG Motors would launch their products in the segment too. The Compass has come out to be the best-selling SUV for the past couple of months. The segment has seen steady growth over the past few years, which makes it for a popular segment in the future.

Both the brands are expected to use different engines to power their respective SUVs on the common platform. The all-new Mahindra XUV 500 is expected to be powered by an all-new 2.0-litre diesel engine, which will be BS VI emission norm compliant. The engine will produce around 180 Bhp of maximum power, which is much higher than the current engine’s 155 Bhp output. Ford is expected to use its own set of engines to keep the character of the vehicle completely different.

Meanwhile, Ford is extending its partnership with Mahindra for distribution as well. Ford now sells its EcoSport and Figo Aspire cars from Mahindra dealerships in India’s smaller towns and cities, thereby expanding its reach. More Ford SUVs may be sold using this set-up in future.
