Many customers who were interested in EVs found them slightly more expensive when compared to ICE versions, which is what stopped them from buying one. However, we now have good news for them: Indian car manufacturers Tata Motors and MG have announced that they are slashing the prices of their electric cars in the Indian market. This price slash will make EVs from these manufacturers a lot more affordable than before. In fact, the diesel version of the Tata Nexon is actually more expensive than the Nexon EV in Delhi now.

The reason behind this price cut was the reduction in the price of the battery packs used in EVs. According to the Times of India, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Tata’s passenger car electric mobility division, stated that they were passing on the battery price reduction benefits to the customer.

We all know that the battery pack used in electric vehicles constitutes a major chunk of the car’s pricing. “With battery cell prices having softened in the recent past and considering their potential reduction in the foreseeable future, we have chosen to proactively pass on the resulting benefits directly to customers.”

The Tata Nexon EV will see a maximum price reduction of Rs 1.2 lakh, while the Tiago EV will see a price drop of Rs 70,000. This brings the ex-showroom and on-road price of the electric SUV down. For example, the Creative diesel AMT variant of the Tata Nexon is currently priced at Rs 15.47 lakh on-road, whereas the Nexon EV Creative variant would cost a customer Rs 15.26 lakh on road in Delhi. The prices mentioned here are for Delhi. Depending on the state you are from, the on-road price would differ.

This makes the electric version of the Nexon a lot more affordable than the diesel version. This, along with a lower running cost of Rs 1 per km, makes the Nexon EV a good deal for customers. The Nexon Creative Petrol AMT variant is Rs 13.65 lakh on-road in Delhi.

However, if you consider the low running and maintenance costs of EVs, the Nexon EV still feels like a good deal. For example, in order to drive the Nexon EV for 15,000 km, a customer will have to spend Rs 15,000. When it comes to the diesel Nexon, the running cost for 15,000 km is Rs 96,021, and the same increases to Rs 1.2 lakh for the petrol version.

Tata launched the Nexon EV in the market in 2020. The SUV became popular among buyers as it was the most affordable electric SUV one could buy in India. The SUV received a major facelift last year, and a detailed first drive review of the same is available on our website as well.

The SUV is available in Creative+, Fearless, Fearless+, Fearless+S, Empowered, and Empowered+ trims. The SUV is available with two different battery options: a Medium Range (MR) variant and Long Range (LR) version.

The Nexon EV MR uses a 30kWh battery, whereas the LR variant gets a larger 40.5kWh battery. The MR version of the Nexon EV offers a claimed range of 325 kilometers on a single charge, while the LR version has a claimed driving range of 465 kilometers. Other than Tata Motors, MG reduced the price of their Comet EV by Rs 1 lakh, and their MG SZ EV is now Rs 7 lakh cheaper.
