Hero MotoCorp and Harley Davidson announced their partnership last year. They did not clear anything about the future at that time. However, recently Hero announced the new prices of the Harley Davidson motorcycles that will be on sale in India. Hero also announced that they will be managing sales, service and distribution for Harley Davidson. The agreement also said that both the manufacturers will be developing mid-capacity motorcycles for Harley. However, now according to the reports Hero will also have the same capacity motorcycles of their own that will be developed with Harley Davidson.
Niranjan Gupta, chief financial officer, Hero MotoCorp said, “The key part of the Harley Davidson tie-up is the license to build the middle-weight segment, which is a very profitable segment, and the lead player has a market share of around 90 percent. So, there is this whole thing of developing the bike and putting it out in the market, both under the Harley and Hero name.” While the manufacturer has not revealed any timeline for the launch of the new motorcycle, Niranjan added that dedicated teams have already started working on bikes and are making progress.
The Indian manufacturer is expected to launch 500 cc motorcycles that could just be rebadged versions of Harley Davidson or Hero could make changes of their own. Until now, Hero MotoCorp has not produced a motorcycle that has a cubic capacity of more than 225 cc. So, entering into a larger segment could be a game-changer for the manufacturer. The details of the new engine have not been unveiled yet but it is expected to go into a middle-weight segment. In India, the middle-weight segment starts at 350 cc whereas in the international market the middle-weight segment is 500 cc to 900 cc.
The 350 cc segment is currently dominated by Royal Enfield. They have the Classic 350, Bullet 350 and the Meteor 350. They also have the Himalayan 411, Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650. The Chennai-based manufacturer is also working on a new J-platform Classic 350 and new 650 cruisers.
On the other hand, the most powerful motorcycle that Hero MotoCorp has a 200 cc engine. The same engine is shared by the Xtreme 200S, XPulse 200T and the XPulse 200. It is a single-cylinder, four-stroke, fuel-injected, oil-cooled engine that produces around 17.5 bhp of max power and a peak torque output of 16.5 Nm. It is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The current flagship of Hero MotoCorp is the Xtreme 200S. It is a fully-faired version of the Xtreme 200R which is now discontinued because of the BS6 emission norms. The 200R also came with the same 200 cc single-cylinder engine that 18.4 PS of max power and 17.1 Nm of peak torque.
Harley Davidson is already working on a sub-400 cc motorcycle that will first debut with the name of QJMotor SRV300 in China. It is a cruiser motorcycle with a 296 cc V-twin engine that should produce around 30 PS of max power. The engine should feature liquid cooling and the motorcycle should be able to hit a top speed of 129 kmph. The kerb weight of the motorcycle is 163 kgs.
