Honda Activa BEATS Hero Splendor: Back on top as India’s best selling two wheeler

India’s best selling gearless scooter Honda Activa has beaten country’s best selling bike Hero Splendor in terms of total units old this July. Not only that, the Activa has outsold the Splendor in a big way. Honda sold a total of 2,43,605 units of the Activa in July this year, down 15 per cent from 2,86,380 units sold in July 2018. However, Hero is far behind with only 1,30,333 units of the Splendor sold in July this year, down from 2,60,865 units sold in July 2018.  As evident from the data itself, the Activa has taken a lead of more than 1 lakh unit ahead of the Splendor this July.

To let you know, Hero Splendor and the Honda Activa have been involved in this top spot number game since long. In the month of January this year, Hero took the top honours by selling 2,23,909 units of the Splendor as compared to 2,13,302 units of the Honda Activa. The difference here was minor but the gap grew in February with the Splendor selling 244,241 units while the Activa just managed 205,239 units. Note that the earlier sales data of the Splendor included the sales of Splendor 125 as well but since the last two months, sales of the latter have not been included with the Splendor sales data.

Talking about the Hero Splendor, the popular commuter bike comes in multiple variants including the Splendor Plus, Splendor Plus i3S, Super Splendor 125 and Splendor iSmart. Among them, the Splendor Plus is the lowest priced variant while the Splendor 125 is the highest-priced model. The Splendor series is offered with 3 engine options – 98.2cc, 110cc and 125 cc.

All three engines come paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The rock-solid reliability of its engines, high mileage and affordable price tag are some of the reasons which make the Splendor India’s best selling motorcycle. The Honda Activa, on the other hand, is the best selling gearless scooter of India for more than a decade now. As is the case with the Splendor, the Honda Activa is also offered with multiple variants and engine capacities. The entry-level model is the Activa-i while the Activa 5G is the mid variant and is also the best selling one. The top-end variant of the Activa range is the Activa 125.

While the sales of the Splendor majorly come from semi-urban and rural areas, demand for the Activa is mainly from urban areas. A reason for the high sales of Activa or any gearless scooter can be attributed to their unisex appeal. The Activa is bought by both men and women for the convenience it offers. The Activa is extremely reliable, delivers high fuel efficiency, costs little to maintain, and also gets an all-metal body in the 5G variant. All these reasons come together to make the Activa the best selling scooter in the country.
