Honda Cars India’s best-selling vehicle in the Indian market is also the best-selling vehicle in the segment. Honda City leads the segment in CY 2020 with sales of 21,826 units from January to December 2020. Honda has sold more City than the Ciaz and the Verna, which are two of the biggest competitors of the City.
Honda launched the all-new fifth-generation City earlier this year. However, Honda also sells the last-generation of the City in the Indian market. Honda does not give separate numbers for the old City and the all-new City. Both the vehicles get registered under the same model name.

“The City brand has been synonymous with Honda in India. Continuously re-inventing itself, each generation of the Honda City has offered new technologies and value propositions to enthrall its customers, creating a benchmark for quality and trust in the process. The launch of 5th Generation City in July last year gave a much-needed impetus to the mid-size sedan segment despite the challenging times. We want to extend our gratitude to our patrons who have continued to show their love for the City brand and experience the pride of owning this model.”
Honda has also announced that the customers have chosen the top-end ZX variant more than any other variant. Almost 50% of the customers bought the top-end ZX version of the vehicle. While 48% of the customers have chosen the CVT variant of the all-new 5th-generation Honda City in the initial six months.
Honda City is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC DOHC unit that generates 121 PS of peak power and 145 Nm of peak torque. It is available with manual and CVT gearbox options. Interestingly, the CVT version is more fuel-efficient than petrol manual. The diesel version is powered by a 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine that generates 100 PS of peak power and 200 Nm of peak torque. It is available with a manual gearbox option only. Prices for the all-new Honda City start from Rs 10.89 lakh, ex-showroom.
Honda has recently announced that they will discontinue the Civic and the CR-V in the Indian market. Also, the brand has shut down its Greater Noida plant and has shifted all its production to the Alwar plant, Rajasthan. In the coming months, Honda may launch new vehicles in the Indian market including a few all-new vehicles.
With the launch of the all-new Honda contributed to the growth of the mid-size sedan too. The segment saw a growth of 10% in the period July to December 2020 after the launch of the all-new Honda City. The cumulative sales for the segment from July and December 2020 stand at 45,277 units compared to 41,22 units in the same period last year. The Honda City cumulative sales in July – December 2020 period is 17,347 units.
Honda also plans to launch the all-new HR-V in the Indian market. The vehicle will take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Seltos in the Indian market in the future.
