The 10th generation Honda Civic is all set to make a comeback into India next month, reports HinduBusinessline. The facelifted version of the car is what Honda will launch in the Indian market. It will be positioned as an upgrade for existing Honda City owners. The Civic will sit in the D-Segment sedan space, and will take on the likes of the Toyota Corolla Altis, the Skoda Octavia and the Hyundai Elantra.
As for pricing, expect prices to start from about Rs. 15-16 lakhs for the base variant. The big deal about the new Civic is that it’ll be available with a diesel engine for the first time in the Indian market. The engine in question is the 1.6 liter all-alumnium turbocharged diesel unit that’s already being assembled in India by Honda’s Tapukara engine plant for export markets and use in the new CR-V SUV.
On the Honda Civic, this motor will make 118 Bhp-300 Nm, and will be offered with a single gearbox option in the form of a 6 speed manual transmission. While the CR-V uses same state of this engine along with a 9 speed automatic gearbox, the automatic gearbox won’t be offered on the Civic. The petrol motor on the Civic will be a 1.8 liter i- VTEC unit with 138 Bhp-175 Nm.
This motor is expected to be offered with a CVT automatic gearbox as standard. So, for people wanting convenience, the petrol engine is the only option on the new Civic. The competition does offer a lot more in terms of options though. The Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Corolla Altis offer manual and automatic gearbox options on their petrol variants. The Octavia and Elantra offer diesel automatics as well.
The Honda Civic missing out on these options could make it a lot less attractive to D-Segment sedan buyers though, and the Japanese automaker will have to rely on badge value and novelty to sell the car. Meanwhile, the new Honda Civic’s design is a major departure from the low slung form factor of the version that was sold in India. The new car gets a coupe-like plunging roof line.
This design makes it look sportier than the other D-Segment sedans sold in India apart from perhaps the Octavia vRS. Other key design elements on the car include smoked headlamps, piano black finish for the front grille, and chrome treatment for parts such as the front and rear bumpers. A key new feature on the inside include a 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
International versions of the car get Collision Mitigation Braking System with forward collision warning, Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, and Adaptive Cruise Control as standard. However, the India-spec version is likely to make do with airbags, ABS and ESP are the key safety features across the variant line-up.
The Honda Civic will be assembled through the completely knocked down (CKD) kit route. Affordable pricing will be key in order to make the new car popular.
