2014 will see Honda unleashing a 3 car blitz in the Indian car market. What’s coming up has already been showcased in India and other parts of the world. The key details now shift to the timelines of these product launches.
2014 Honda City
Launch: January 2014
The 2014 Honda City will be the first car to feature the next generation Jazz platform in the Indian market. The City features new design elements that help differentiate it from the outgoing version while the longer wheelbase allows for greater space on the innards. The car also features new interiors, new creature comforts and a new dashboard design. Overall, the design of the 2014 City is more evolutionary than revolutionary. Already unveiled in India late last month, the new City sedan will be launched in January 2014, when the car’s prices will also be announced. A 1.5 litre i-DTEC turbo diesel engine outputting higher power and torque figures than the Amaze, and a 6 speed manual gearbox to accompany are the major mechanical changes on the 2014 City. The 1.5 liter i-VTEC petrol engine, along with its manual and automatic gearbox options are likely to be carried over to the new City sedan.
2014 Honda Mobilio MPV
Launch: March-April 2014
Aimed at the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, the 2014 Honda Mobilio MPV will make its local debut at the upcoming Indian Auto Expo. Measuring 4.4 meters in length, this 7 seat MPV is longer than the Ertiga. Engines and gearboxes of the Mobilio, including the 1.5 liter i-DTEC turbo diesel engine, are likely to be shared with the 2014 City. Given the Mobilio’s extensive parts and platform sharing with the likes of the Brio and Amaze, the MPV could be sharply priced. The production of the Mobilio will begin in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, which is to say March-April. A launch in April 2014 is likely. The production of the Brio platform underpinned cars (Brio, Amaze and Mobilio) will shift to Honda’s new factory at Tapukara, Rajasthan, from the existing Greater Noida factory.
2014 Honda Jazz
Launch: October-November 2014
The next generation Jazz will be the third and final major product launch by Honda Cars India. A festive season 2014 debut is on the cards for the new Jazz B+ segment hatchback, which along with the City, CR-V and Accord, will roll out from Honda’s expanded Greater Noida factory, off New Delhi. The 2014 Jazz, based on an all-new platform, will be offered with diesel power (1.5 liter i-DTEC turbo diesel motor). A 1.2 liter i-VTEC petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options will also be offered on the new Jazz, which features new design elements on the exterior and interior. The Jazz is expected to be pitted against the Hyundai i20 in terms of price and positioning, as a spacious, practical and premium hatchback.
A common thread that will run across all new Honda cars launched in 2014 will be high localization and parts sharing levels. Also, diesel power will be standard across all new Honda cars launching in India next year. With Honda having tasted the formula for success in India through the Amaze, sharp pricing could be another factor common to the new cars being launched.
