SUVs are the fastest growing segment in India. With rising demand, manufacturers are rushing to launch new SUVs in the market while updating the current generation of the vehicles. In 2018, we will see a launch of many new SUVs in the market. Let’s find out what ones they are.
Tata Nexon AMT
Expected launch: April 2018
Tata showcased the Nexon AMT at the 2018 Auto Expo and as per latest reports, the bookings have been already opened for the vehicle unofficially. Both petrol and diesel engine versions will get the AMT automatic 6-speed transmission but the engines will remain untouched. The Nexon, which is already gaining popularity in the market is expected to get bring in more numbers with the introduction of the AMT. Interestingly, the Vitara Brezza, which is the highest selling model in India does not gets an option of automatic transmission.
Expected launch: June/July 2018
Hyundai will launch the facelifted version of the Creta later this year. The upcoming vehicle has been caught testing in India too. The top-selling SUV in its segment is expected to get a few changes. Most of the changes done are in front. It gets a new bumper, new grille and updated headlamps. The car also gets new alloy wheels.
At the rear, only the bumper is new. Interiors are expected to be reworked too but the feature list will stay similar to the current model except for the addition of a sunroof. The 1.4-litre diesel, 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engines will remain the same but the 1.6-litre diesel engine will be remapped for better performance in traffic.

Renault Duster, which is sold as the Dacia Duster in many foreign markets has been updated globally. The new version of the Renault Duster is available in many international markets but the Indian launch has been delayed due to the arrival of the Captur. Renault is now planning to launch the Duster later this year.
The new Duster gets a new grille and a raked windscreen that adds a fresh look to it. The interiors have also been thoroughly updated to give a modern look. Renault may continue to use the current engine options with the upcoming Duster.
Mahindra XUV 500
Expected launch: End-2018
Mahindra is working on to update the ageing XUV 500 soon. The car is already in works and will get minor styling changes on the outside. The XUV 500 was expected to get a more powerful version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which could churn out a maximum of 170 but according to a source, the current set of engines will remain untouched. The car is expected to get a new grille, new headlamps and minor air-brush job on the body to keep it fresh in the market.

Mahindra is working to bring the Vitara Brezza challenger codenamed as S201. It is based on the SsangYong Tivoli’s X100 platform. It will be first such rebadged product from Mahindra using their Korean subsidiary. The S201 gets monocoque body and both the versions have been caught testing on the Indian soil. Both petrol and diesel engine options will be available with the upcoming car.
The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine will offer class-leading performance and will churn out around 140 Bhp. The diesel engine will be a 1.5-litre unit that churns out a maximum of 125 Bhp. Automatic transmission will be optional but no details have been given out yet. The S201 will be available in two different versions – a sub 4-meter version and a long wheelbase version that will take on the likes of Hyundai Creta in the market.
Mahindra XUV 700
Expected launch: September 2018
Mahindra is also preparing the new flagship, XUV 700 that it showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. The rebadged version of the G4 Rexton, the XUV 700 will be powered by a turbocharged diesel engine with 2.2-litre displacement. This engine has been developed with SsangYong and it develops a peak power of 178 Bhp – 420 Nm.
It gets a 7-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The launch is expected to happen by the year-end. The price is expected to be around Rs. 21 lakh. It will be a feature-loaded, VFM product from the brand.
Ford EcoSport S
Expected launch: Mid-2018
Ford already offers the “S” badge variant with the Figo and the Aspire in the Indian market. Soon they will extend it to the newly launched compact SUV, the EcoSport. It’ll be offered with petrol and diesel engines. It has been already spotted in India and is expected to be launched soon.
The EcoSport S will get sharper steering response and stiffer suspension for the enthusiastic drivers. Notably, the new Ford EcoSport’s steering is not as sharp as the previous model. The engines will remain untouched. The “S” version will be available with both petrol and diesel engine options.
Jeep Compass Trailhawk
Expected launch: April-2018
Jeep Compass has become the best selling vehicle in the segment. The American manufacturer is now planning to bring the Trailhawk, which is the more adventurous version of the vehicle in India. The car has been already spied at a dealer stockyard and is expected to be launched soon.
The car will be powered by the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that generates a maximum power of 170 Bhp – 350 Nm. It gets a 9-speed automatic transmission and many off-road friendly aids. The Trailhawk version gets Jeep’s Active Drive low-range 4WD, hill descent and a new Rock Mode that makes the vehicle more capable.
Expected launch: Mid-2018
Force launched the new Gurkha last year with many new changes and a new look. The SUV currently draws power from a 2.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine that develops a maximum of 85 Bhp and 230 Nm but soon, Force Motors is expected to launch a new 2.2-litre FMTECH engine that also powered the Force One. The new engine can get a power output of around 140 Bhp, making the Gurkha a seriously fun-to-drive SUV.
Maruti Vitara Brezza petrol
Expected launch: April/May-2018
The Maruti Brezza is another highly anticipated car in the Indian market. The Brezza was launched only with a diesel engine with manual transmission and Maruti had expressed that will launch a petrol powered Brezza in the future.
The car will be powered by the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder Boosterjet engine that powers the Baleno RS in the current lineup. It is expected to produce around 110 Bhp. It will be the second SUV in the segment that will be powered by a turbocharged petrol engine after the Nexon petrol in the market.
