Hyundai AX1 micro SUV: Front & rear design of the Maruti S-Presso rival imagined

Hyundai is working on expanding its line-up. They are working on a micro-SUV which has been codenamed AX1. The new vehicle has been spied in other countries. It will be going against the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Mahindra KUV100, upcoming Citroen CC21 and the upcoming Tata HBX. The manufacturer has already released the teasers for the AX1.  Now, we have some new renders that have been based on those teaser images.

The render images show us the rear of the AX1 that has been inspired by the spy shots too. We can see an upright tailgate with a rear wiper and washer. There are triangular elements for the LED brake lights. There is another set of lights placed in the lower half of the bumper. They are circular in design. The outer circle must be a brake light and rear fog lamp while the inner circle is a turn indicator. The reverse light is a simple strip placed in the centre of the lower half of the bumper.

There are two sets of brake lights because as per government norms the brake and the headlights cannot be placed on a moveable part of a vehicle. As the tailgate is a moveable part, Hyundai has to provide a separate set of tail lights in the bumper which is not moveable. We have seen this type of design earlier on many Audi models.

The side profile comes with a new alloy wheels design that we have seen in the spy shots. There are new multi-tone 6-spoke alloy wheels. The wheel arches have a prominent design to emphasise SUV-ness.

The rear door handles are placed on the C-pillars to give a three-door effect to the AX1. This is not the first time we have seen these types of door handles. Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Tata Altroz are using the same type of door handles. The front door handles have a conventional design.

The same artist has also worked on the front of the AX1. It looks like a funky little hatchback with SUV elements. There is a split headlamp design where the upper strip will be the turn indicator while the main headlamp is a circular unit placed in the bumper. From the teasers, we know that there will be a circular LED Daytime Running Lamp strip around the headlamp. The main headlamp unit will a halogen unit itself.

The grille will have triangular elements and will be finished in silver while the lower variants will have a black grille. There will be roof rails, shark-fin antenna, alloy wheels and turn indicators mounted on the outside rearview mirrors. The lower variants will miss out on all this equipment.

The AX1 is expected to be offered in two engine options. There will be a 1.1-litre and a 1.2-litre petrol engine. Both have four cylinders and are naturally aspirated petrol engines. The 1.1-litre engine produces 69 PS of max power and 99 Nm of peak torque. The 1.2-litre engine produces  83 PS of max power and 113 Nm of peak torque. Both will be offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT.
