Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV: New render shows side profile

The demand for SUVs is increasing, but not everyone could afford a SUV, that is how the compact-SUV segment was formed. Then Maruti Suzuki introduced the S-Presso which they marketed as micro-SUV and it was a hit. Due to this, other manufacturers followed, Tata Motors showcased the HBX Concept at Auto Expo 2020 which will be launched later in production form this year. Hyundai did not showcase any concept at the Auto Expo but they are working on a new micro-SUV which has been codenamed AX1. The spy shots of the small SUV have already been surfaced on the internet. Here is the latest render that has been done by SRK Designs for Indian Auto. Where the previous renderings showcased the front of the new micro-SUV, the new one shows us how the side profile of the AX1 might look.

The side profile of the AX1 does resemble looks like a hybrid between the Hyundai Venue and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The overall design is boxy with sharp angles. The wheel arches are squared-off with plastic cladding that runs across the whole side of the AX1. This gives a  rugged and tough look to the micro-SUV. From the spy shots, it is already confirmed that the AX1 will come with C-pillar mounted door handles which will give a two-door look. We have already seen the same design on the Tata Altroz and Maruti Suzuki Swift. There is a strong shoulder line going front to back and we can also see a set of roof rails that will be cosmetic and will not serve a function. The turn indicators are placed on the outside rear view mirrors. The multi-spoke alloy wheels boast the same design that we have seen on the spy shots and there will also be a shark-fin antenna. Overall, we can see a bit of tall-boy design that should open up enough headroom for the occupants.

At the front, there will be a split headlamp design that we have seen on the Hyundai Venue. So, there will be a LED Daytime Running Lamp which will also serve as a turn indicator and there will be a halogen headlamp which will sit below. The front will get the same cascading grille and a faux skid plate that we have seen on other Hyundai vehicles. The AX1 is expected to be underpinned by the K1 platform that is used on the Hyundai Santro. There will be quite a bit of features on offer. For instance, a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, multi-function steering wheel, multi-information display, semi-digital instrument cluster and a lot more.

Powering the Hyundai AX1 will be the naturally aspirated 1.1-litre petrol engine that is seen in Santro hatchback. This engine will be available with a manual and AMT gearbox option. The engine produces 69 PS of max power and 99 Nm of peak torque. There might be a possibility that Hyundai also offers the 1.2-litre petrol Grand i10 Nios hatchback and other Hyundai vehicles. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 83 PS of max power and 114 Nm of peak torque.
