Hyundai is currently testing the upcoming vehicle, which is internally named the AX1. While Hyundai is yet to announce the timeline of launching the all-new AX1 in the Indian market, a new report indicates that Hyundai South Korea start the production of the entry-level SUV in September this year.

According to the report, Hyundai Motor and Gwangju local government have joined hands to open the first automobile plant in the country in 23 years. The work started on the factory two years ago and now that the plant is complete, the first vehicle will roll out in September this year.

The new plant will have able to handle annual production of 70,000 units. The Hyundai AX1 will be the first car to be rolled out of this new plant in the South Korean market. The Indian version can be slightly different and will be made right here in the brand’s Chennai plant.

Hyundai started working on the all-new AX1 sometime back. However, there is no information available on the vehicle. It will take on the likes of Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and the upcoming Tata HBX in the Indian market. The new car will be slotted right between the Hyundai Santro and the Grand i10 NIOS.

Since there are no details available on the platform of the vehicle, it is widely assumed that it will be based on the K1 platform. This is the same platform that also underpins the new Santro and the new Grand i10 NIOS.

Hyundai is likely to use the 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine option with the AX1. However, Hyundai may also offer the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine. There will be manual and automatic transmission options. However, Hyundai will not offer any diesel engine option with the car.

The all-new AX1 gets a tallboy design. Since the i10 is not available in the market anymore and the Santro is not doing very well, especially when compared to the WagonR, the upcoming AX1 will be Hyundai’s new weapon in the entry-level segment. The AX1 will offer a spacious cabin and some smart looking design highlights that will be aimed at the youngsters.

The AX1 follows a straight-line design pattern. There are not many curves on the outside. Even the alloy wheel design gets multiple rectangles. The cabin design of the AX1 is not out or visible in any of the pictures yet. However, even the cabin is likely to get squarish design elements all around.
