Powerful new variants of the Hyundai Creta Diesel launched

Hyundai India has just launched the Creta Diesel 1.6 in E+ and EX trims. The Hyundai Creta 1.6 Diesel E+ is priced at Rs. 10.88 lakhs while the EX variant is priced at Rs. 11.92 lakhs. Both variants represent a premium of about Rs. 90,000 over the 1.4 liter diesel engined E+ and EX variants of the SUV. For the extra price, buyers will now get the powerful 1.6 liter CRDI turbo diesel engine with 126 Bhp-260 Nm on tap, which is a big bump up over the 89 Bhp-220 Nm outputs of the 1.4 liter diesel engine. A 6 speed manual gearbox will be standard with the bigger engine, which is also available with a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox on the SX trim. The bigger engine will make the Creta not just a lot quicker but also more competitive against the Kia Seltos, which offers a 1.5 liter, 115 Bhp-250 Nm diesel motor even on its base trim priced at Rs. 9.99 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.

But will this be enough to pull back market share from the Kia Seltos? Time will tell, given the fact that the Seltos is now India’s best selling 4+ meter compact SUV. For now, Hyundai is doing its best to cling on to buyers interested in a compact SUV by offering a more powerful turbo diesel engine at a relatively affordable price tag. The Creta is also available with two other engine options: a smaller 1.4 liter turbo diesel that’s offer exclusively with a 6 speed manual gearbox, and a 1.6 liter petrol engine with 121 Bhp-153 Nm outputs that gets 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options. Prices of the Creta start from Rs. 9.99 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi, and a 2nd generation, all new model will be launched in India by the end of next year.

Coming to the equipment on offer in the E+ and EX trims of the Creta 1.6 Diesel, the SUV’s E+ trim gets twin airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder, halogen headlamps, remote locking, manual air conditioning, electrically adjustable wing mirrors, front armrest, tilt-adjustable steering and power windows as standard features. The EX trim adds LED DRLs, a rear armrest, adjustable rear headrests, a rear parking camera and a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with steering-mounted controls. For those looking for a powerful diesel SUV at an attractive price tag minus the long waiting periods, the E+ and EX trims make a lot of sense. In the coming weeks, these trims are also likely to get decent discounts.
