Maruti Suzuki wants a bigger pie of India’s SUV market. So, it’ll launch a brand new SUV in the Hyundai Creta segment next year. The new offering in question will be the Suzuki Vitara, which has already been spotted testing in India. The SUV is already on sale in the European market, and is offered with both petrol and diesel engine options.
In India, Maruti is expected to position the Vitara above the S-Cross in terms of pricing and positioning. This also indicates that there could be a price overlap between the Vitara and the XUV500, similar to how there’s an overlap between the Creta and XUV.
The petrol variant of the Vitara is likely to use the 1.4 liter BoosterJet turbocharged petrol engine that outputs 140 Bhp and 230 Nm. With these outputs, the vehicle will be a class leader in the compact SUV segment. The diesel engine will be the 1.6 liter Fiat Multijet unit, again turbocharged and with outputs of 120 Bhp and 320 Nm.
6 speed manual and automatic gearboxes could be offered on the petrol engine while the diesel may have only a 6 speed manual gearbox option. The Vitara will be predominantly a front wheel driven SUV in India. We’re not sure if an all wheel drive layout would be offered here. The Vitara sold abroad gets all wheel drive.
The Vitara will be a five seat SUV with airbags and ABS offered as standard. Considering its premium positioning, we expect the SUV to be sold through the NEXA chain of dealerships. Expect prices of the Vitara to start between Rs. 9-10 lakhs. A large amount of localization is likely for the new vehicle to keep pricing competitive.
This localization is also expected to allow Maruti to deploy the 1.4 liter BoosterJet petrol engine in the Swift Sport. The Vitara is expected to be launched sometime next year. Maruti is yet to give a clear indication on the exact launch timeline of the new SUV.
