Hyundai launched the BS6 compliant Elantra premium sedan in the Indian market in October 2019. Currently, the car is only available with a petrol engine but soon Hyundai will launch the Elantra powered by a new diesel engine option. As per information available online, the new Elantra BS6 will get the 1,5-litre diesel engine that powers the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Venue and even the newly launched Hyundai Creta in the Indian market. The Elantra Diesel BS6 is available in two trims: SX MT and SX (O) AT. The trims are priced at 22.18 lakh and 24.45 lakh respectively, on road Delhi.
The new BS6 compliant Elantra will get the 1.5-litre U2 CRDI engine that powers a range of other Hyundai cars. The engine made its debut in India with the Kia Seltos. This is a 1,493cc, four-cylinder engine with a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). It generates a maximum power of 115 PS at 4,00 rpm and peak torque of 250 Nm between 1,500 and 2,750 rpm.
It should be noted that the pre-BS6 version of the Hyundai Elantra came powered by a 1.6-litre diesel engine that generated a maximum power of 128 PS and peak torque of 260 Nm. The new BS6 compliant diesel variants of the Elantra will be less powerful than before but it is expected to return more fuel efficiency. Also, the new 1.5-litre diesel engine will be available with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
