Hyundai India has pulled off a surprise of sorts by soft launching the facelifted Elantra D-Segment sedan. The car gets a mid life makeover, which has already made it to the international-spec variants. For a brief period of time after its launch in 2012, the Elantra was the best selling D-Segment sedan in India. However, the advent of the new Toyota Corolla Altis saw the Hyundai sedan being inched out of its top perch. With the Elantra Facelift, Hyundai will aim to regain lost ground even as matching the Corolla Altis in terms of sheer numbers will be a feat hard to achieve.

The facelifted version of the Elantra starts at 14.13 lakh rupees, for the base S petrol variant. The SX petrol variant is priced at 15.41 lakh rupees while the top-spec SX-AT (automatic) variant selling for 16.5 lakh rupees, all prices reflecting ex-showroom Delhi figures. Talking diesels, the base variant is priced at 14.58 lakh rupees, the S variant at 15.35 lakh rupees, the SX variant at 16.68 lakh rupees and the SX-AT variant at 17.94 lakh rupees. Engines and transmissions remain unchanged with the Elantra remaining a front wheel driven sedan.

The petrol motor is a 1.8 liter-4 cylinder unit with 148 Bhp and 178 Nm on tap. The diesel motors displaces 1.6 liters, in a four cylinder layout, and makes 126 Bhp-260 Nm. Six speed manual and automatic transmissions are standard fare on both the petrol and turbo diesel variants of the car. Coming to the slew of changes the facelifted car has received, both the exteriors and the interiors get a once over. Up front, a new bumper, headlamps with projectors and LED light guides, larger fog lamps and a chrome insert for the grille are the noticeable changes.

The flanks features revised alloy wheels, a chrome lined belt line and chromed door handles. Sensing Indian car buyers’ penchant for all things chromed, the rear also gets a dollop of the shiny stuff, with a chrome tipped exhaust finisher. LED tail lamps and a resculpted bumpers round off the changes on the car’s exteriors. On the inside, the dual tone beige and black dashboard makes way for a black dashboard with silver accents. Repositioned, larger air conditioning vents and a larger, 4.3 inch touch screen infotainment display on the center console make for the other changes on the innards of the car.
