Hyundai’s upcoming small car, HA (800 cc car) was caught being tested in Chennai. The heavily camouflaged test mule had a face very similar to the Hyundai i10, especially the rear design. We can expect Hyundai’s global signature grille at the front as in the newly launched Hyundai Elantra and Sonata in international markets.
Sources say that HA is developed on the Hyundai Santro platform and will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Alto and top-end Tata Nano, the LX variant. Thinking on this line, the HA will be pitched below the Santro in Hyundai’s Indian portfolio and could be priced between Rs. 2 – Rs. 3 lakh. HA could be launched in second half of 2011.
As we reported earlier, Hyundai has been developing HA at its R&D in Hyderabad with help from Hyundai’s Korean product development team. As per reliable sources, Hyundai HA (petrol only) will be powered by a 814 cc, 3 cylinder engine that produces 45 hp of maximum power and there could also be a higher variant powered by a 1.0 litre Kappa engine.
Hyundai has been the second largest car maker in India and it has lot of expertise in making long lasting products such as the Santro and i10 which are cheap yet reliable. Hence, HA could just be the winner and Alto slayer if the company continues to focus on quality and equipping HA with features in par with the competition (Maruti Alto).
Chevrolet Spark 800
GM India is said to be building its 800cc engine for the Chevrolet Spark platform for the Indian market. The company has said that its existing Spark platform is capable of using a mini-car with a 0.8-litre engine. Hence, when Chevrolet Spark 800 cc and Hyundai HA 800 cc will be launched, what will be Maruti doing?
Maruti’s Made in India small car
Well, India’s No.1 car maker is planning to reveal the ‘Made in India’ small car code named as YE3 at the Delhi Auto Expo 2012. Sources speculate that the new car will replace the aged Maruti 800. The engine could be a smaller 600 cc one so as to price the car competitively and invade upon upcoming Hyundai’s H800 small car.
Tata Nano Diesel
Tata Nano, which triggered the price war and caused a major threat to Maruti’s and Hyundai’s entry small cars, will not be left behind in this race. The company is planning to launch the diesel version of the Tata Nano in September 2011. This news comes from the vendors associated with the Tata Nano and hence is absolutely reliable. The diesel Nano could be priced at an attractive price range of Rs. 1.8 – 2.2 lakh. The engine will likely be in the 600cc-700 cc range like the current petrol (623 cc).
Summing up, by 2012, we will witness launch of 4 cars in the Rs. 2 lakh – 3 lakh price ranges: Hyundai Ha, New Maruti small car, Tata Nano diesel and Chevy Spark 800 cc. Who will be the ultimate winner? We have to wait and watch!
