Hyundai India could take a leaf out of the books of Volkswagen, Toyota and Fiat, to launch a crossover kit equipped version of its Elite i20 B+ segment hatchback. The Elite i20 with a crossover kit was spotted testing on the Bangalore-Chennai highway, which also hosts the South Korean automaker’s factory at Sriperumbudur. The Elite i20’s crossover variant could be Hyundai’s bridge model between the i20 Elite and the iX25 compact SUV, which incidentally shares its platform with the former.
In terms of pricing, expect the Elite i20 with the crossover kit to command a premium of about 40,000-50,000 rupees, over and above the regular variants of the B+ segment hatchback. Bumper inserts at the front and rear, body cladding all around, roof rails and taller wheels could be the various new features offered on the Elite i20 based crossover styled hatchback. A higher ground clearance also seems in order, considering the crossover looks of the new car. It must be noted that Hyundai sells a crossover styled version of the Kia Venga in Europe, under the iX20 moniker.
The engines and gearboxes of the Elite i20, in the form of the 1.2 liter petrol and 1.4 liter turbo diesel motors, and the 5 speed manual transmissions, are expected to be retained on the crossover styled version. With the cross styled Elite i20, Hyundai India will be venturing into slippery territory as multiple cars styled thus have failed to enthuse buyers here. The Fiat Palio Adventure, the Skoda Fabia Scout, the Volkswagen Cross Polo and most recently, the Toyota Etios Cross, have been tepid sellers at best.
One car that could status quo in this segment is the Fiat Avventura, which launches later today. Perhaps, the Avventura will pave way for new crossover styled hatchbacks such as the Elite i20 based model. For now though, the crossover styled hatchback segment is still a work-in-progress as far as sales success and market acceptance is concerned.
