New spyshots of the Hyundai i20 Elite based crossover have hit the interweb. This time around, projector headlamps from the Euro-spec i20 Elite (known as the all-new i20 in Europe) and the distinctive LED tail lamps from the India-spec i20 Elite are prominently seen on the Cross model. Given that crossover models based on hatchbacks are usually about 40,000 rupees pricier than hatchback equivalents, the Hyundai i20 Elite Cross if put into production promises to rub shoulders with the recently launched Fiat Avventura, a crossover based on the Punto EVO.
Visible changes on the i20 Elite Cross include the addition of body cladding, revised front grille elements and new alloy wheels. The 1.2 liter Kappa petrol and the 1.4 liter CRDI turbo diesel engines that power the i20 Elite are likely to be carried over to the Cross version of the B+ segment hatchback. 5 speed manual transmissions will be offered on the i20 Elite based cross as Hyundai deems a 1.4 liter petrol engine-automatic gearbox an option that would make the car too expensive for mass market buyers. The i20 Elite Cross is likely to see an early 2015 launch in India.
Prices of the i20 Elite hatchback range between 4.9 and 7.67 lakh rupees. The Hyundai i20 Elite Cross is likely to start from about 5.5 lakh rupees, going all the way up to 8.3-8.4 lakh rupees. There are three other hatchback based crossover models selling in the Indian car market presently, in the form of the Volkswagen Polo Cross, the Toyota Etios Cross and the Fiat Avventura. Apart from the Fiat Avventura’s promising start at the hustings, with 500 pre-bookings, the other two crossovers based on hatchbacks have been tepid successes at best.
