Hyundai i20 gets more features and 2 new variants

Earlier, there were reports that Hyundai will be updating the variants of the i20. Well, the reports were true not only Hyundai has updated the variants with new features, but they also have introduced two new variants.

Till now, the i20’s 1.2-litre petrol engine was offered only with the manual gearbox on the top-spec variant which is known as Asta(O). So, either the buyer can get an automatic gearbox or all the bells and whistles. However, now Hyundai has introduced the 1.2-litre petrol engine with a CVT automatic transmission on the Asta(O) variant. So, now you can get all the features of the top-spec variant with the automatic transmission. The 1.2 Petrol CVT has been priced at Rs. 10.51 lakhs ex-showroom.

Then there is the new 1.0 DCT Sportz. So far, the 1.0 DCT was offered only with the Asta and Asta(O) variants and the Sportz variant came only with the manual gearbox. But now, you can the more powerful engine with an automatic transmission on the Sportz variant. You would be able to save Rs. 1.05 lakhs if you opt for the Sportz DCT variant instead of Asta DCT. The 1.0 DCT Sportz is priced at Rs. 9.76 lakhs ex-showroom.

More features added

While rearranging the variants, Hyundai took the opportunity to update the features of the existing variants of i20. So, the Sportz variant now comes with automatic climate control. Before this, it came with manual air conditioning. However, the big feature added to the Sportz variant is cruise control. This feature can be very helpful on long journeys on which you have to travel a lot on highways.

The Asta variant now comes with an electric sunroof as standard. Earlier, the sunroof was offered starting from the iMT Asta model. Asta variant also comes with cruise control now. However, Hyundai has removed the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which means it also does no longer gets BlueLink connected car features. The 10.25-inch unit has been replaced with the smaller 8-inch unit.

There are also some small other feature additions. The Magna variants now come with wheel covers finished in gunmetal grey. Till now, they were finished in silver. The Asta(O) variant now gets additional voice commands that work with the BlueLink.

Prices and rivals

The prices of the i20 start at Rs. 6.98 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 11.33 lakhs ex-showroom. It has to compete against Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Tata Altroz and the upcoming Toyota Glanza.

No mechanical changes

There are no changes to the engine or the gearbox of the i20. It is still offered with three engines. There is a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine, 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The naturally aspirated engine produces 83 PS or 88 PS if you get the CVT, the torque amount stays the same at 113 Nm. As standard, it gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. The diesel engine produces 100 PS and 240 Nm. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox only. The turbo petrol puts out 120 PS and 172 Nm. It is mated to a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT.
