The SUV segment in India is booming and is the fastest growing segment in the market. Customers are looking to buy more SUV-inspired vehicles that give them a very dominating look on the road and also have enough ground clearance to tackle the rough Indian roads. After manufacturers like Maruti, Mahindra and Renault launched their products in the segment, India’s second largest carmaker – Hyundai – has revealed their plans to launch a vehicle in the same segment. This micro SUV will challenge the Maruti Ignis and the Mahindra KUV100.
What is it about?
In an interview to Live Mint, Y. K. Koo, Managing Director, Hyundai India, said,
“We have a small SUV Creta; maybe later, we may have a micro SUV also. We will have a very strong SUV line-up. We will increase our product portfolio in the SUV segment and with Creta, we have tasted success in the segment as well, as we continue to sell almost 10,000 units every month, which is great given the price point at which the vehicle is available.”
The exact timeline of the upcoming micro SUV has not been revealed yet, but it is expected to be launched around 2019-2020. Hyundai Creta, which is the only SUV in the affordable segment from the manufacturer, has tasted grand success in the market. The company showcased the Carlino concept at the 2018 Auto Expo and the first sub-4-meter SUV from the brand is expected to be launched by the end of 2018 or early 2019. With the all-new micro SUV planned for the Indian market, Hyundai can gain massive numbers in the market.
Currently, the segment sees the likes of Maruti Ignis and the Mahindra KUV 100. The Renault Kwid’s sales have come down over the time, while the Maruti Ignis and the Mahindra KUV 100 see a decent sales figure every month. Hyundai is yet to reveal any detail on the upcoming vehicle and has only indicated that there can be a car in the segment in the future.
