Hyundai India has officially announced the arrival of the all-new IONIQ 5 in the Indian market. The all-new IONIQ 5 recently became World Car of the Year (WCOTY) and won awards in five different categories. The premium electric car is built on the unique electric skateboard platform, which will spawn a lot of new cars in the future.
The South Korean brand has confirmed that the all-new IONIQ 5 will arrive in the second half of this year. While Hyundai is yet to provide an exact date, it is likely to come to the market around the festive season that starts around September in India.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Unsoo Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said,
“As a customer-centric brand, Hyundai is focussing very strongly on electric mobility across its businesses and product range for a progressive and sustainable future. Hyundai is proud to receive the World Car of the Year 2022 for the IONIQ 5 as this award is a true testament to our vision and efforts in driving the adoption of BEVs globally. IONIQ 5 will epitomize the innovative application of intelligent technology in mobility. With our 25-year journey of togetherness in India, Hyundai is happy to partner with this great nation on a new quest to charge up the adoption of EVs at scale.”
How is Hyundai IONIQ 5 different?
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was first previewed as the 45 EV concept car way back in 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The IONIQ 5 does not follow the design language of any of the existing Hyundai cars. It gets a very clean and futuristic design. The electric car gets a straight-lined design with a high bonnet position that imitates the SUV design.
The IONIQ 5 also comes with futuristic features including pixilated front and rear LED lamps and an outstanding alloy wheel design that adds a contrast to the straight-lined design of the IONIQ5.
The new Hyundai IONIQ 5 gets an electric skateboard platform that allows flexible cabin designs. Since it is designed to fit an electric vehicle, the floor is flat and the seats are designed in a way that they can slide and recline. It even gets a futuristic centre console that can slide up and back 140mm.
The car gets 12-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system with Hyundai’s Bluelink connected-car suite. The IONIQ 5 will become the brand’s first electric car with radars and sensors, which will give it ADAS capabilities.
Hyundai IONIQ 5 gets a long range
The new IONIQ 5 comes is available with two battery packs in the international markets. There is a large 72.6 kWh battery pack and a smaller 58 kWh battery pack. While the car is yet to be tested by Indian authorities, according to the WLTP cycle, the bigger battery pack can return 481 km of range while the smaller battery pack can drive the car for up to 383 km.
The IONIQ 5 also gets a unique 800V battery technology. The system allows the battery to charge quickly. This means in just 18 minutes, the IONIQ5’s battery can go from 10 percent to 80 percent using a 220 kW DC charger.
