Hyundai QXi compact SUV (Maruti Brezza challenger) to get brand new turbo petrol engine

Hyundai first showcased a sub-4 meter compact SUV in the form of the Carlino concept at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo. The production version of this concept, code-named the QXi, will be powered by a 1 liter, turbocharged petrol engine. The engine is expected to feature a 3 cylinder layout, and expect power and torque figures to be about 100 Bhp-150 Nm, or more. The motor is expected to offer direct injection, a technology that makes turbocharged petrols more fuel efficient, and cleaner burning.

This SUV will challenge other sub-4 meter compact SUVs in India such as the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and Ford EcoSport. However, the new Hyundai sub-4 meter SUV will be launched only in the first half of 2019. Hyundai may showcase another iteration of the Carlino concept at the upcoming Auto Expo.

Apart from the turbocharged petrol engine, the SUV is also expected to feature a turbocharged diesel engine. The 1.4 liter CRDI diesel unit, used on many Hyundai cars such as the i20 Elite and Creta, is expected to power the new QXi SUV as well.

The QXi is expected to be offered with manual and automatic gearbox options as Hyundai traditionally loads its vehicles with multiple transmission options. Since the QXi wil be a late entrant, more the features, the better. Other details about the QXi are not known for now.

Going by the Carlino concept, expect a butch looking vehicle with high ground clearance, high seating position and good street presence. Hyundai is already the leader of India’s compact SUV segment. With the new sub-4 meter SUV, the company could give Maruti a good run for its money even in the lower segment.
